Beware of Bad Actors

What’s just outside your window: Below, Florida carpenter ants are farming Pink Hibiscus Mealybugs (PHM) or (PM) “Maconellicoccus hirsutus” feeding on a Hibiscus plant. Its common name is misleading. This animal feeds on over 200 kinds of fruit, vegetable, and ornamental plants. Native to Southern Asia, PM has managed to spread throughout Florida, and is currently in Southern California, Louisiana, and Georgia. Ants harvest the mealybugs’ f***l excrement commonly referred to as honeydew. These mealybugs are just 1 of 32,000+ identified “Homopteran,” plant damaging, piercing, sap-sucking insects. Literally, thousands of ant species have biologically mutual relationships with homopteran insects, most identified as scale, aphids, whitefly, psyllids, and mealybugs. Ants farm, protect, manipulate, and maintain these insects to repeatedly harvest their honeydew rich in sugars and amino acids, the ants transfer to their nests to feed their eusocial colony members. Ants attack, maim, and destroy nature’s beneficial predators that feed on mealybugs and other plant damaging insects. Lady beetles, lace wings, hover fly larvae, big-eyed bugs, assassin bugs, parasitic wasps, and numerous kinds of spiders are nature’s ideal natural pest controllers. Recruiting and encouraging diverse populations of beneficial insects to always be present and thriving on site resets the ecological sustainability balance in your favor. A subject for another day.

The purpose of this post; Here in Florida our recent hurricanes have exacerbated the spread of numerous kinds of arthropods, insects & spiders easily moved about in their various life stages attached to plant debris and through means of human transport. Also, PM as first instar crawlers, and winged adults are normally carried by winds.
