Harvesting seaweed with my little one for our garden.

We are lucky living on an island to have an over abundance of seaweed at our toes!

Seaweed is a fantastic fertilizer that stimulates growth with minerals and carbohydrates, and has no potential of disease to plants.

It can be composted or even directly laid on beds at this time of year when gardens are being put to rest

We are using the winter days mulching with seaweed all our fruit trees and other perennials.

If you’re a gardener or farmer, you know there’s good years and bad for certain crops. Whacky weather, a change in soil biology, new predators etc etc. I’ve definitely remembered season looking back saying “that was a great cucumber year”, or “best peach year we’ve ever had”, or even the dreaded “thats the year all my tomatoes got blight!”. Well, even with our depleted nutrient clay soil, I can say we are having a great sweet pea season!!

Put in 98% of our new apple orchard. It took weeks clearing it and prepping it, since we have a one year old and Dan has a construction co. Then we put in swales because it’s on a slope and got all but one tree in (cuz it’s still in the ground in our nursery). We planted comfrey (nitrogen fixing, attract beneficial pollinators, and stabilizing swale) on the edges of the swales and seeded clover (nitrogen) and turnips (break up clay soil). We have some serious clay soil under the humus that’s from previous forest underbrush. There’s a back hedgerow of seaberry (nitrogen fixing high yielding berry). And soon to have more hedgerows of lavender at the entryway and butterfly bush on the side. This is just one of many projects growing on our new 5 acres.

Wanna talk No-Till!?
