When heat goes out and temps drop below 0°F, squirrels aren’t “wandering into” garages.
They’re running from death.
Garages hold leftover car heat, block brutal wind, and stay several degrees warmer—often the only survivable space during extreme cold.

Squirrels will squeeze through tiny gaps because their lives depend on it.
🚫 DO NOT PANIC-EVICT
Forcing a squirrel back outside at -5°F can cause rapid hypothermia and death.
They are not invading.
They are escaping lethal cold.
✅ WHAT TO DO (48–72 HOURS ONLY)
• Keep the door to the house closed
• Leave a small garage exit cracked
• Keep lights and noise low
• Let the squirrel leave once temperatures rise
They don’t want to stay.
They leave as soon as it’s safe.
⚠️ Fear of danger is tiny.
Risk of freezing outside is 100%.
Your inconvenience lasts hours.
A squirrel’s survival depends on it.
After the storm: seal gaps.
During the storm: coexist.

Opossums do not hibernate, and thin fur leaves ears and tails vulnerable to frostbite when winter food disappears.

Young are born extremely small and still learning to forage, so a yard or porch can mean survival on cold nights.
