When is a bee not a bee?
It's World Bee Day. Recognize any of these great pollinators?

Support pollinators by keeping your trees and shrubs in good health. Proper watering, pruning out dead wood, composted wood chip mulch around the root zone...all these actions are easy steps to take or recommended to help pollinators thrive. We hope you enjoy and share this awesome graphic as much as we do!

Attention attention! May we have your attention?

Homeowners often prefer a highly manicured landscape out of fear of pests. But manicured landscapes harm biodiversity and encourage more pests in the long run. The best way to fight pests and diseases? Support a healthy environment with plenty of native plant species. Those plants will support the biodiversity we need for a healthy balance. www.healthyyards.org

One more poison awareness for you!

Can you identify these plants? Three of them poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac can cause an allergic reaction on the skin of most people who touch them with bare skin. View the article: https://bit.ly/IdentifyPoisonIvy

The rash from these three plants is caused by the oil urushiol, and some people have reactions that are severe enough to warrant emergency medical attention.

Learning to distinguish harmless plants like virginia creeper, box elder, and peppervine from poisonous plants will make for more pleasant and safe outdoor experiences this summer.

Please please please do not Myrtle Massacre your crape! This is not pruning!!

You've probably seen crape myrtles with the tops of all their branches cut off. "Topping" isn't considered a proper way to prune because it affects the plant's shape (creating more upright sprouts as it grows back), leaves large areas of exposed wood, and can increase future maintenance requirements. Topped crape myrtles also bloom later than others.

If planted in full sun in a location with plenty of room for plant growth, crape myrtle is a low maintenance plant needing little or no maintenance!

Learn more about what's wrong with topping here:https://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/woody/documents/CrapeMyrtlePruning.pdf

Incorrect pruning: topping crape myrtles ruins the natural form of the plant.
Instead: use naturalistic pruning to remove small twigs (or leave unpruned).

Extremely important information for all my mid Atlantic folks!

Extremely important information for all my mid Atlantic folks!

Poison ivy (and poison oak as well) has three leaves. “Fingers three, turn and flee” is from 1902 and “Leaves three, quickly flee” is from 1904. The rhyme “leaflets three, let it be” has been cited in print since at least 1907.

“Leaves of three, let it be!” was cited in print in 1959 and “Leaves of three, let them be” was cited in print in 1977. However, the rhyme minimizes the danger of other plants; poison sumac has 7—13 leaflets.

Similar poison ivy rhymes include “Leaves of five, let it thrive,” “Berries white, a poisonous sight,” “Hairy vine, no friend of mine” and “Raggy rope, don’t be a dope.”
