RANDY’S STORY...
Construction just came naturally to me as I fell into my father’s shoes. I am a second generation builder. I worked for a small construction outfit in Crestwood, KY for six months or so and the builder encouraged me to go out on my own. He was actually the one who pushed me towards being self-employed. I had to borrow the money from a bank to get my workman’s comp and general liability insurances - about $2,800, as well as I remember, which was a whole lot of money for my wife Nancy and me. My very first house framing job was a Homearama house in Lousiville. My builder won first place that year for "Best Home”. Since the very first nail that I drove on my own, I’ve never looked back and framed professionally from 1994-1999.
As a framing contractor, I would soon know if the foundation I was building on was level and square. I followed behind foundation installers that didn’t seem to know the meaning of those two words - “level” and “square”. I told my dad, who was working for me at the time, that we were going into the foundation business knowing that I could do a much better job than anything I was seeing. Foundations are the one part of the home that needs to be level and must be square - the foundation sets the standard for all the other sub-contractors to follow. And by the way, having my dad work for me was an honor and privilege, as he taught me more than any college ever could. We were also the very best of friends!
