What’s Happening Inside Your Tree as Fall Begins?
As September arrives, we notice the first hints of fall in the landscape—but some of the most important seasonal changes are happening inside your trees.
Shorter days and cooler temperatures signal that it’s time for trees to begin preparing for winter. Growth starts to slow, and trees shift their priorities from producing new leaves and shoots to conserving resources and storing energy for the months ahead.
One of the most visible parts of this transition is leaf senescence—the natural aging process that eventually leads leaves to change color and fall. Before letting those leaves go, deciduous trees reclaim and redistribute valuable nutrients, helping prepare themselves for dormancy and future spring growth.
It’s a remarkable process—and a reminder that even when a tree appears to be “slowing down,” there’s still plenty happening beneath the surface.
At Arboreal Solutions, we look beyond what’s immediately visible. Understanding a tree’s biology, its growing environment, and the stresses it has experienced helps us make thoughtful, science-based recommendations for its long-term health.
