Pepitas
Mesa, Arizona
This watercolor explores the quiet beauty of an everyday moment: freshly rinsed pepitas resting in a colander. What began as a simple kitchen task became an unexpected study of color, light, and pattern. I was drawn to the way the seeds gathered into a shifting landscape of greens, each one slightly different in shape, tone, and texture.
The perforations of the colander create a rhythm that contrasts with the organic forms of the pepitas, while the cool washes of the background emphasize the freshness and vitality of the seeds themselves. By isolating this ordinary subject and viewing it up close, I hoped to reveal details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Much of my work is rooted in the act of slowing down and paying attention. In this piece, I celebrate the beauty hidden within the routine—the idea that even the most commonplace objects can become fascinating when observed with curiosity and care.
