Happy International Pilates Day! 🧘✹

Today is a celebration of movement, but for me, it’s also a celebration of resilience.
My journey with Pilates didn’t start smoothly. A few years ago, I was training at a big reformer franchise and ended up with a back injury that sidelined me for a long time. I stepped away entirely until October 2024, when I had a wake-up call: I realized I was starting to have trouble simply balancing on one foot.
I knew I needed to return to the reformer, but I had to do it the right way. I sought out private lessons to focus on true form, and that’s when I found the incredible Liz McHugh (). It’s been 1.5 years of consistent work, and I am honestly amazed at how much my body has changed. I feel like I’m aging backwards.

The absolute best part? Sharing the progress with friends! I’ve even managed to get in on the fun. There’s nothing like the energy of a shared session to keep you motivated.

Huge thank you to Liz for being such a guiding force in my recovery and growth. If you’ve been hesitant to try Pilates because of a past injury, this is your sign: find the right instructor who truly sees you. It makes all the difference!

So proud of my dear friend and colleague, , for this breathtaking tablescape at this past weekend! This marks Shawna’s 4th year participating, and she truly outdoes herself every single time. Beyond being a powerhouse designer, her floral skills honestly rival the pros and this color palette is nothing short of exquisite

The ultimate designer hack? She took simple and inexpensive white linen napkins and added a border using the extra fabric from the table skirt. It’s those intentional details that she’s known for that transformed these into a completely upscaled
look!

Shawna, you are a vision (and can we talk about that dress?!). Huge congratulations! đŸ’›đŸ€ŽđŸ’›đŸ€ŽđŸ’›đŸ€Ž

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a child introduced early to old films may very well fall irrevocably in love with Jane Austen.

At the tender age of ten, I encountered the 1940 Pride and Prejudice starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. Though I now recognize it as a somewhat liberal interpretation of the original text, I was utterly and forever enchanted. Thus began my devotion to our dear Jane.

When my daughter was eight, I commenced reading Pride and Prejudice aloud to her, confidently declaring it the one book she must carry with her through life—a guide to wit, discernment, and the perils of first impressions.

Today marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. My husband insists I have watched the 1995 BBC adaptation no fewer than 250 times (a gross exaggeration
perhaps), and I make it my annual habit to revisit the novel itself. While I admire all of Auntie Jane’s works, Pride and Prejudice has always held my heart. Indeed, without Jane Austen, one suspects there would be no Hallmark Channel at all. 😉

This past January, I had the great pleasure of visiting Jane Austen’s house in Chawton—absolute heaven. One exhibit invited visitors to consider which Austen character they most resemble. I am, without hesitation, a Lizzie—though I hope a trifle less inclined to judge too hastily. I was highly amused by the number of Mr. Collinses among us.

And you—dear reader—whom do you claim?

Happy Birthday, Jane. 💚💚💚

It’s that time of year again!
Tomorrow l’ll be in Charlottesville for my annual wreath-making workshop at . A tradition I’ve cherished since 2008. In 17 years, l’ve only missed three— twice while creating a giant pom-pom Christmas tree for Children’s Hospital’s Light Up the Season (2018), and a gingerbread house for the Washington Design Center’s Holiday FĂȘte (2019). It goes without saying that there was no workshop in 2020!

Since 2021, it’s become even more special and l’ve been attending with my daughters, and .

Swipe to see a montage of wreaths that have graced my door over the years. I can’t wait to see what I (we) come up with this season and l’Il be sure to share!

Ending the year on such a high note!

A huge thank-you to Home & Design Magazine for featuring me in their “End Notes” column. I’m truly honored to be included and had the best time sharing a little peek into my British-inspired loves, favorite escapes, and the pieces that make my home feel like home.

Grateful for the recognition, the support, and this beautiful design community I adore.

Looking forward to all the creativity 2026 will bring!

A number of years ago, our family decided to forgo the traditional Thanksgiving spread. After a lifetime of turkey and stuffing followed a month later by the exact same meal, the charm had worn off.

Since then, we’ve embraced a “simpler,” more elevated approach. Think: a dinner-party-level menu instead of the usual holiday lineup.

This year’s menu:

New England Clam Chowder (my first time making this!)
Herb Roasted Pork Loin w/ Bourbon Gravy
Roasted Rosemary Potato Slices
Green Beans
Parker House Rolls and dessert prepared by my lovely DIL,

It’s been years since I’ve taken the helm in the kitchen, so I pulled out a beloved classic from The Best of Gourmet - 1993 Edition. Setting it on my old, pre-iPad cookbook stand brought back so many memories.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving—and whatever lands on your table this year, I hope it’s absolutely delicious. 🧡

As we near the end of October, I’ve been stumped about what to post for my annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month message. As fate would have it, this morning I had what I hope will be my very last appointment with my oncologist.

This past April, I completed my five-year course of Tamoxifen. Sitting in the doctor’s office today, I realized that over a 16-year period—two breast cancer diagnoses, one lumpectomy, radiation, a double mastectomy, and years of medication—I had never shed a single tear about my situation. I’ve always been very stiff upper lip, very keep calm and carry on.

But today, for reasons I can’t quite explain, I began to sob like a baby. I’m sure people thought I’d received terrible news, when in fact the opposite was true. Choosing a DMX (double mastectomy) greatly reduced my chance of recurrence. Nothing is ever 100%, but I’ve significantly improved my odds.

So, as I do each October—and will continue to do—I want to encourage my friends and family to schedule their yearly mammograms and perform monthly self-examinations. My outcome is what it is because of early detection. Nothing breaks my heart more than hearing of someone losing their battle with breast cancer.

Early on, I came to realize that even in many worst-case scenarios, breast cancer can often be managed as a chronic condition. My deepest wish is that women (and men) get that same fighting chance—through early detection.

đŸ€
I also want to thank the incredible medical teams who have cared for me over the years—including my male GYN, who did not dismiss my concern when I mentioned a tiny change in my breast, no bigger than a kernel of kosher salt.
But most of all, my deepest gratitude goes to my family, whose love and support gave me the strength to get through it all.

Happy Anniversary to the man who still makes me laugh even when I’m trying not to!!
