A quick look at our perspective when we’re inspecting the upper canopy of a tree. It’s easy to miss dead limbs when looking up from the ground because they blend into the foliage behind them. Once we’re up in a tree we typically find a lot more deadwood that we hadn’t spotted from the ground.

Before & after shots of a crape myrtle we pruned for health and structure. The crape myrtle had previously been topped, which triggered lots of crowded, sprouty growth. The dense canopy created a good environment for a scale infestation to take hold. We treated the infestation last year, and this year we pruned the tree to open up the canopy and allow for more light and airflow. A sunny, well ventilated trunk is much less susceptible to scale.

Yesterday, we were on the job when we heard the unmistakable crack of a tree trunk splitting nearby. We went over to see what had happened and found a large white pine lying on its side blocking a street. Luckily no one was hurt and there was no significant property damage. We got to work, carefully removing limbs and cutting the trunk back until it was completely clear from the road. We felt quite fortunate to have been able to respond so quickly and clear the road before the blockage caused significant rush hour delays, and we are grateful that no one was hurt when the tree fell.

The leaves are out and the growing season has begun! It’s going to be unseasonably hot today, and your trees would love a deep watering (even the mature trees) to help ease them into wakefulness after a long winter slumber. We have watering guidelines on our website under ‘services’. It’s so nice to see the foliage returning to DC again!

Sometimes you can’t see a tree’s structural defects from the ground. A thorough canopy inspection by a trained arborist can reveal hollows (like in the video), cracks, decay, broken limbs, and other potential hazards that were not apparent in an initial ground inspection. These hazards can then be mitigated through targeted pruning, support cabling, and if necessary, removal of the tree. As the change of season brings windy days, give us a call to inspect your trees and recommend care plans, so that your trees can remain a safe and healthy part of your landscape.
