Designed in 1905 for Dr. and Mrs. John Ryan Devereux, Wirelawn began as a modest stucco and frame residence. In 1910, architect Clark Waggaman reimagined the home by adding two elegant wings, a brick facade, and a thoughtfully designed garden, which shaped much of what stands today. Throughout its storied history, Wirelawn has welcomed presidents, senators, and ambassadors, standing today as a distinguished landmark in Chevy Chase, Maryland. When we first encountered the site, the landscape was defined by a disorganized layering of styles, mismatched hardscape, and overgrown trees and shrubs that obscured the home’s architectural beauty.
Our design fosters a stronger dialogue between the house and garden, extending the architectural materials, symmetry, and strength into the landscape. A hydrangea hedge separates the house from the driveway, while a limestone wall and hornbeam hedge along the street edge offer privacy and acoustic comfort. Reclaimed brick piers at the driveway and entry terrace further tie the landscape to the home’s original materials, reinforcing its sense of place and permanence.
The result is a cohesive and enduring landscape that honors Wirelawn’s rich heritage while supporting a new chapter of life. Rooted in history yet designed for longevity, the landscape reflects a thoughtful balance between past and present, a timeless narrative of continuity and renewal.
