This past week, we started looking at an outdoor or exterior set of steps that led to a wood deck. The deck really looks good, but when we say that, we’re referring to the visual aesthetic only. From a code compliance and construction perspective, the deck has several defects that go back to the original construction. It should be noted that this particular deck is not here in Washington DC and the same rules don’t apply. Nonetheless, it’s a perfect point of comparison to explain some of the rules that do apply here to all of us in Washington DC.

Recently, we looked at a beautiful deck, outside of Washington DC, where building codes and rules are different. We’re going to look at several different facets and aspects of this particular deck to draw comparisons to the modern building code in Washington DC and show examples of why that building code is helpful from a safety perspective. We will also show several photos and examples of places where people often skip requirements of the building code either because they’re unaware of the rules and or because the regular municipal inspectors do not check things fully or properly.

Composite decking is very popular nowadays, for a handful or reasons. Today, and this coming week, we’ll look at a handful of pros and cons for why composite decking may be a decent alternative to traditional wood decking materials. In most cases, when we talk about decks being built with composite materials, we’re really referring to a deck that’s still framed in a similar way to traditional methodologies. In blogs in the months past, we looked at a condition of an off-centered girder support post in the intermediary span between the sides of a deck. We discussed how it’s important that this particular post be off-centered, in the layout of most typical Washington DC row homes because space is relatively limited and without an offset, the post would actually block the access to the driveway and the garage. Although it seems like off-centering a intermediary post would compromise the structural capacity, generally, the span remaining at the wider area of the opening is still small enough that it maintains capacity.

Over the past several months, we looked at lots of different examples of decks built in typical urban areas. Today we are looking at something similar and these particular decks are built on the rear of buildings built within close proximity to one another. The big difference between these buildings though and the typical ones we see here in Washington DC are that these buildings are modern buildings or contemporary style construction buildings, built side-by-side like typical historic row homes.
