For countries in the British West Indies, today, August 3, 2015, is Emancipation Day! This holiday takes place on the first Monday of every August and marks the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which ended slavery in the British Empire the year after. On this day, many people all across the Caribbean celebrate the abolition of slavery with a number of festivities and others choose to commemorate and examine the progress of equality in this region.

To learn more about this day and its significance, we implore you to check out these discussions. As Marcus Garvey once said, "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots," so we must strive to make ourselves more noble than our former selves by simply taking a glance at history.
