Sweet, tangy, and naturally cooling, Tamar Hindi is a traditional Egyptian & Syrian drink made from fresh tamarind, lemon juice, and aromatic rosewater. Perfect for hydration after Iftar, this drink is refreshing, bold, and packed with flavor!
Ingredients (Serves 4-6)
✅ For the Tamarind Base:
• 1 cup tamarind pulp (or 200g dried tamarind)
• 4 cups water
• ½ cup sugar (or to taste)
• 1 tbsp lemon juice (for brightness)
• 1 tsp rosewater or orange blossom water (optional)
• ½ tsp ground cinnamon (optional, for warmth)
✅ For Serving:
• Crushed ice
• Mint leaves (optional garnish)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Tamarind Mixture
1️⃣ If using dried tamarind, break it into small pieces and soak it in 2 cups of warm water for at least 2-3 hours (or overnight).
2️⃣ Mash the tamarind pulp, then strain it through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove any fibers and seeds.
Step 2: Make the Juice
3️⃣ In a saucepan, add the strained tamarind pulp, remaining water, and sugar.
4️⃣ Simmer over medium heat for 5-10 minutes, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
5️⃣ Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice, rosewater (if using), and cinnamon.
6️⃣ Let the juice cool, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Step 3: Serve & Enjoy!
7️⃣ Pour the chilled Tamar Hindi into glasses filled with crushed ice.
8️⃣ Garnish with fresh mint leaves and serve immediately!
Serving Tips:
• Adjust sugar levels to your taste for a sweeter or tangier flavor.
• Serve extra chilled for the best refreshment.
• Try adding a pinch of black salt or ginger for extra depth.
