Well that happened!

I’m running on fumes, still trying to get everything done because there are no days off, sick days, or any other days besides work days on a homestead.

So naturally, my daughter’s rabbit chose today to become a first-time mom.

We’re keeping a close eye on her and the babies while she figures out the whole motherhood thing.

Send good vibes and positive thoughts for this new mama and her babies.

Get ready with me for a real homestead morning.

No glamorous makeup.
No matching chore outfit.
No cute egg apron.

Just me “borrowing” my husband’s fire-retardant clothes because that’s what today’s tasks call for after we feed the babies, and make the rounds to everyone else.

BUT, what’s more important than that is introducing you all to our beautiful rabbits. Five of these adorable new babies need names!

PLEASE drop your best bunny name suggestions in the comments. The more ridiculous the better.

WARNING: We have officially entered the “tiny goat chaos” era of the homestead 🐐💀

Meet Bandit & Hazel — the newest feral residents of the homestead. We brought these little Nigerian Dwarf babies home about 3 weeks ago, and now at just one month old, they’ve already:
• declared ownership of the house
• turned my wheelchair into a jungle gym
• attempted to eat my clothes, hair, furniture, wheelchair, and demolished my will to fight them
• mastered the art of launching themselves off random objects for absolutely no reason
• and somehow convinced everyone they’re innocent immediately afterward

The amount of energy packed into these tiny little bodies should honestly be studied by scientists.

But truthfully, these babies have been such a blessing to our homestead already. On the days when wheelchair life and the pain from living with a rare bone disease hit extra hard, these two have a way of making me laugh whether I want to or not. It’s hard to stay down in the dumps when tiny goats are parkouring off your wheelchair and/or body like overly caffeinated feral gremlins. 😂

They’re wild, hilarious, spoiled already, and FULL of love… which fits in perfectly around Feral Hearts Homestead! Thanks to these adorable and already spoiled animals, I now have no chance at finishing a project, and apparently all my mobility equipment now belongs to the goats. 🌿🐐

Rabbit cage building update: I’m pretty sure my husband tried to sacrifice me because I wouldn’t give him a drawer in my new awesome tool chest. 🔥🐇

While working on cages, our old grinder literally EXPLODED and caught fire… IN MY HANDS. Thankfully I was able to throw it out of the garage and into the driveway before things got really exciting. 😅 Looks like he still won’t be getting a drawer in my toolbox just yet.

On the bright side, this epic homesteading fail gave me an excellent excuse to go tool shopping. After an unnecessarily long debate in the tool aisle, we officially decided to start transitioning away from Ryobi and various other tool brands and begin building an army of cordless Kobalt tools instead. RIP to our wallet, but hello to what will hopefully be a much safer tool with a longer shelf life. 💙

ALSO — despite the attempted grinder assassination, I finished 2 more 3-hole cages for my daughters’ Dutch bunnies! 🐰 We’re still waiting on the right-side latches and purple decorative wire guards, but the cages are coming together fast and honestly each build keeps getting better.

At this point the rabbits are about to have nicer housing than we do. 🤷‍♀️

Custom Cage and/or Transport Carriers anyone?

I finally invested in the power tools, equipment, and supplies to start building my own cages and transport carriers. Originally, this was just meant to make my barn expansion easier and help me avoid the outrageous shipping costs and long wait times for cages that still aren’t designed specifically for my space.

I’ve already built a few cages and, naturally, I immediately decided I want to go with a different size instead. 😂 So if anyone is interested, these two cages are available! They’re 30”x30” and 24” tall.

I’m still waiting on the right-side cage locks and the plastic trim/wire protectors for the door frames before they’re fully finished. I originally planned to hang mine, but if someone would rather have wooden legs added so they sit off the ground, I can easily do that too.

And if you have a specific size or setup in mind, send me a message and let’s see what we can work out!

I went with the husband to run some errands, and while he was in the store I found this beauty for only $25 🤯👏

Naturally, the husband immediately decided it’s his toolbox now. Since picking it up he has been admiring it like it’s a classic truck at a county fair.

But this beauty is destined to go outside in my barn to store all of my animals supplies. Pretty sure if I turn my back for 5 minutes it may roll its way into the garage and all of his tools will magically relocate into it. 😂

What do y’all think…Should I generously allow him a drawer or two? Or do I stand my ground and protect my treasure? 👀🔧🧰 😂

Well… after accidentally abandoning this page for a couple years like an overgrown garden bed, I’m officially back. 😂🌿

Life got busy, things changed, animals happened, dreams evolved, and somewhere along the way this little homestead dream found its real name:

💜 Feral Hearts Homestead 💜

Because around here things are a little chaotic, a little muddy, deeply loved, occasionally held together with caffeine and stubbornness… and honestly…. That feels pretty accurate.

So consider this the official relaunch of our homestead adventure. Expect goats, chickens, projects, garden attempts, country chaos, and probably a few “what have we done?” moments.

Thanks for sticking around while this page collected dust. We’re finally breathing life back into it.
