Today is the Plan Commission meeting where my conditional use permit will be reviewed.

I am feeling hopeful, a little nervous, and very grateful for the support I have received.

Red Bilita Flowers has always been about more than selling bouquets. It is about growing flowers right here in Waterloo, showing what can be grown locally, and sharing the beauty of the season with others.

Thank you for caring about this little flower cart, this garden, and this small business. 🌸

Tomorrow evening, my conditional use permit will be reviewed by the Plan Commission.

I have tried to stay focused on the flowers, the gardens, and the work I love doing, but I would be lying if I said this has not been on my mind.

My hope is simply to continue growing and sharing flowers from my own property in a way that is respectful, honest, and good for the community.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out, encouraged me, asked thoughtful questions, or taken the time to understand what I do. Your support has helped me stay grounded. 🌿

I have been thinking a lot lately about how much a small business depends on community.

Not just purchases, but encouragement. A kind comment. A shared post. A jar dropped off for donated bouquets. A message saying, “I hope things work out.”

Those little things add up.

Thank you for being part of this small flower-growing community here in Waterloo. I am grateful for every person who sees value in locally grown flowers and the joy they bring. 🌸

Did you know that many flowers are cut before they are fully open?

For example, lilies are often cut when the buds are showing color but have not opened yet. This allows them to open slowly and beautifully after cutting, which gives you more time to enjoy them.

Some flowers are best cut when they are just starting to open, while others need to be fully open before harvest. Learning the right stage for each flower is one of the most important parts of growing quality cut flowers.

It is part science, part experience, and part paying close attention. 🌿

A little behind-the-scenes flower joy today. 🌼

Even when plans change, the flowers keep growing. The plants still need watering, cutting, weeding, feeding, and tending. And honestly, that has been grounding for me.

There is something very steadying about working with plants. They do not rush. They respond to care. They remind us that small daily efforts matter.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to encourage me, check in, share kind words, and support locally grown flowers in whatever way you can. It means more than you know.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated jars for the little flower bouquets that will be going out with Meals on Wheels deliveries this Friday. 🌸

Your generosity is helping turn simple flowers into small acts of kindness for people in our community. These bouquets will hopefully brighten someone’s room, lift their spirits, and remind them that someone is thinking of them.

I received enough jars that not all of them will be used this week, and I am so grateful for that. The remaining jars will be saved and used for future donated bouquets as more flowers become available throughout the season.

I’ll be taking pictures of the little bouquets before they head out for delivery on Friday, and I look forward to sharing them with you. Thank you again for helping make this possible. 💐

I have had several people reach out and ask how they can support my business and the Red Bilita Flower Cart while I wait for the June 23 Plan Commission meeting.

First, thank you. The kind messages and encouragement have meant so much.

I have been thinking a lot about why this little flower cart matters to me.

The flowers I sell through Red Bilita Flowers are 100% homegrown right here in Waterloo. They are not purchased and resold. They are grown from this small piece of land — from annuals, biennials, perennials, bulbs, and shrubs that change throughout the season.

To me, the cart is not just about selling bouquets.

It is about showing what can be grown right here in town. It is about inspiring someone to start a few flowers from seed, plant bulbs for spring, cut a couple peony stems from their own yard, or simply remember how good it feels to play in the dirt.

I believe flower carts, vegetable stands, and small homegrown businesses should not only belong in the countryside. They can be a special part of small-town life too, especially when they are operated with care and respect for the community around them.

If you would like to support the Red Bilita Flower Cart, one helpful thing you can do is send a short, kind email to the City of Waterloo before the June 23 Plan Commission meeting.

Emails may be sent to:

Mayor Jenifer Quimby: [email protected]
City Clerk Jeanne Ritter: [email protected]

Because there may be more than one flower cart-related item on the agenda, I kindly ask that any messages focus specifically on Red Bilita Flowers and my 100% homegrown Waterloo flower cart.

Please keep any messages positive, respectful, and focused on support.

Thank you for cheering me on, buying flowers, sharing posts, saving jars, and reminding me that this little cart has brought joy to more people than I realized.

Whether the cart is open or closed right now, the flowers are still growing — and I am still grateful. 🌸

One thing I love teaching people about locally grown flowers is that they are naturally seasonal.

Unlike flowers shipped from far away, locally grown flowers change week by week. That means bouquets in June look very different from bouquets in August or October.

June flowers often have a softer, garden-grown feeling — airy stems, early perennials, delicate fillers, and the first flush of summer color. Later in the season, the bouquets become bolder with zinnias, dahlias, celosia, sunflowers, and grasses.

That changing rhythm is part of what makes homegrown flowers so special. Each bouquet belongs to a specific moment in the season. 🌸
