I came across a recent local news story involving a Waukegan homeowner who paid a contractor thousands of dollars for a bathroom remodel, only to be left with demolition work and no follow-through.

Situations like this are frustrating—and preventable. Most homeowners aren’t experts in construction, so they rely on trust. Unfortunately, when expectations, payment structure, and accountability aren’t clearly defined, things can go sideways fast.

If you’re planning a home project, here are a few ways to protect yourself:
• Be cautious with large upfront payments (materials only is reasonable)
• Structure payments around completed milestones
• Ask for receipts when materials are purchased on your behalf
• Get a clear scope of work in writing before work begins
• Be wary of repeated payment requests without visible progress

As a local contractor, this is why I run my projects with transparency, clear communication, and defined payment stages. My goal is for clients to feel confident and informed every step of the way—not anxious or in the dark.
