And this is why we trust the science, not the weather's vibe.

Most plants have both a minimum soil temperature and minimum air temperature preference. Putting them in the garden prior to both of those being consistent can be detrimental to survivability and yield.

I test the soil by planting pole beans and squash seeds.

Pole beans can germinate in soil temps consistently at 60F or above and air temps above 45F. Squash prefer 70F soil and air temps above 50F.

These zucchini plants were the only 2 of 15 that germinated, even though our weather has been mild. This tells me to soil is not consistently warm enough for warm-weather crops like tomatoes. And see what happened to them when the temps dipped last night?

It was forecasted for 40. It hit 40, supposedly. Not a frost, right?

The plants tell a different tale.

Trust the science, not the vibe of the weather.

High, low, fast, slow has been my mantra for years in the garden. Increased yields, pest protection, soil protection, bio diversity, all the benefits!

I teach you how on the week's episode of the Just Grow Something podcast.

It'll wash off. I've got seeds to get in the ground. 😉

I'll be growing ginger in crates in my greenhouse to ensure proper temps and humidity. Got any tips for me?

Keeping my seed inventory updated makes it super easy to take advantage of flash sales when they pop up, especially at the end of the season when major catalogs are dumping their excess for CHEAP.

I did an initial inventory by plant type, variety, and number of seeds on hand. Bonus points for noting where they came from so I can easily find them again.

As seed orders come in, they get added to the inventory. As I plant them, they get removed.

Now I have an accurate inventory all season long and can shop with confidence when I see a bargain just by pulling out my inventory sheet!

I truly love what I do.

Sometimes I get paid to speak to large groups of people.

Sometimes I volunteer to speak to about a dozen high school students.

Sometimes it's hard to know which is more satisfying.

Thank you notes like this make that last one a little easier to define. ❤️

(The kid who called me "a living legend" was probably the cross country runner who was fascinated by my ultramarathons. 🤣)

The "barn bed" is definitely getting a major glow up! Can't wait for the final results (you know, after we wait for all this nasty weather to go away 🥶).

Planter Box Direct planters are my absolute favorite and these make the 27th beds I've ordered from them since 2022! They're made in the U.S. from U.S. steel in so many colors, I've lost count. This Sunset Blue is stunning.
