And this is why we trust the science, not the weather's vibe.
Most plants have both a minimum soil temperature and minimum air temperature preference. Putting them in the garden prior to both of those being consistent can be detrimental to survivability and yield.
I test the soil by planting pole beans and squash seeds.
Pole beans can germinate in soil temps consistently at 60F or above and air temps above 45F. Squash prefer 70F soil and air temps above 50F.
These zucchini plants were the only 2 of 15 that germinated, even though our weather has been mild. This tells me to soil is not consistently warm enough for warm-weather crops like tomatoes. And see what happened to them when the temps dipped last night?
It was forecasted for 40. It hit 40, supposedly. Not a frost, right?
The plants tell a different tale.
