Garden Conservancy Open Days Tour
I am excited to announce that there will be a Open Days Tour at Flying Pig Farm tomorrow! Purchase your tickets online in advance and come explore this beautiful property between 10am-4pm. I have had the pleasure of being the head gardener here since 2019, and I thoroughly enjoy tending to the extensive existing gardens, renovating garden beds, and creating new gardens with my team.
Here are some projects I’m particularly proud of:
Meadow Gardens: I designed and installed three meadow gardens that have filled in beautifully. Some of my favorite plants featured here include Veronicastrum virginicum, Rhododendron viscosum, Lilium canadense, Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Little Henry’, and Chelone lyonii. These meadow gardens are spectacular in late summer and fall, buzzing with bees and butterflies.
Cutting Garden: A few years ago, we transformed a full-shade Hosta bed into a vibrant cutting garden full of annuals, peonies, and roses after shade-casting trees were removed. The peonies are now well-established and thriving. This season, I’ve included some newly released Floret originals and fun cutting varieties like Nigella and Cynoglossum.
Plant List: This past year, we compiled a (nearly) comprehensive plant list for the entire property. It was a rewarding experience to walk the property and identify each plant, with Margaret transcribing the list. Special thanks to my original botany teacher, Nishanta Rajakaruna, for teaching me how to remember and recall botanical names, and to my perennial plant mentor, Lee McLaughlin, for helping me expand and deepen my plant knowledge.
I also want to thank my past and current team, particularly .shiatsu, for tending to these gardens weekly with me!
I look forward to sharing these beautiful gardens with you. See you tomorrow!
