Our garden season began in March with apple pruning projects. We care for a large orchard as well as many small home orchards. We love to prune and tend to fruit trees and bushes🍎🍐🫐🍑🍇🍏

Another exciting project this year has been grafting scionwood from a client’s old apple tree onto hardy rootstock. It’s been a long wait with the cool spring we’ve had, but a number of the trees in our mini-nursery are showing signs of success! 💫🌿🍎

Keep us in mind for future fruit pruning and grafting projects- we’d love to assist you with your home orchards and backyard fruit!

Garden Conservancy Open Days Tour
I am excited to announce that there will be a Open Days Tour at Flying Pig Farm tomorrow! Purchase your tickets online in advance and come explore this beautiful property between 10am-4pm. I have had the pleasure of being the head gardener here since 2019, and I thoroughly enjoy tending to the extensive existing gardens, renovating garden beds, and creating new gardens with my team.

Here are some projects I’m particularly proud of:

Meadow Gardens: I designed and installed three meadow gardens that have filled in beautifully. Some of my favorite plants featured here include Veronicastrum virginicum, Rhododendron viscosum, Lilium canadense, Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Little Henry’, and Chelone lyonii. These meadow gardens are spectacular in late summer and fall, buzzing with bees and butterflies.

Cutting Garden: A few years ago, we transformed a full-shade Hosta bed into a vibrant cutting garden full of annuals, peonies, and roses after shade-casting trees were removed. The peonies are now well-established and thriving. This season, I’ve included some newly released Floret originals and fun cutting varieties like Nigella and Cynoglossum.

Plant List: This past year, we compiled a (nearly) comprehensive plant list for the entire property. It was a rewarding experience to walk the property and identify each plant, with Margaret transcribing the list. Special thanks to my original botany teacher, Nishanta Rajakaruna, for teaching me how to remember and recall botanical names, and to my perennial plant mentor, Lee McLaughlin, for helping me expand and deepen my plant knowledge.

I also want to thank my past and current team, particularly .shiatsu, for tending to these gardens weekly with me!

I look forward to sharing these beautiful gardens with you. See you tomorrow!

One of our projects from last week 🌷

Photo 1: 8:30am. Before
Photo 2: 8:45am. the compost delivery
Photo 3: 5:30pm. After. The garden has been weeded, deadheaded, edged and topdressed!

Topdressing gardens with well-aged, weed/seed free composted manure has so many benefits!! It retains moisture in the soil, it suppresses weeds, and it provides nutrients to the perennials, annuals and shrubs in the gardens. It always seems like the plants are glowing once surrounded by beautiful compost!

Yellow Fairy Bells ✨🧚

Another of our favorite woodland garden plants! Disporum flavens is in the Polygonatum family, which is why it bears resemblance to Solomon’s Seal. It originates from Korea and thrives in New England woodlands. It’s April/May flowers will surely put a smile on your face!

The after photos from our full day of work yesterday! Someday, I’ll remember to take pictures before all the weeding and mulching is completed! The shadows had grown long by the end of the day, and all the plants are nestled into a layer of mulch which will suppress weeds and retain moisture 💧🌷

‘Gerald Darby’ Iris x robusta is a springtime wonder to behold!

The spring foliage has this purple coloration. As the season goes on, the leaves become uniform green. A real beauty for the “wet feet” areas of your garden and property. As seen here, it thrives in the shallow areas of a pond, planted in the mud 💜

This space began as Siberian Iris completely overgrown with crab grass and weeds.

I removed all the weeds and rocks and added plenty of beautiful composted manure to the depleted soil. I designed the space to burst with colorful flowers to provide a welcoming and cheery entrance to an office building 🌞

Here it is a few months out from the spring planting. Photo from summer 2018
