Philadelphia Urban Row House Kitchen
Tight budget and a small space in a Philadelphia row house made this design a special challenge where the design layout had to meet the culinary interests and entertaining needs of the client. The original home had a wall between the first floor dining room and kitchen, separated by a the stair way to basement and 2nd floor. The homeowners elected to make a major change and remove the bearing wall and replace the stair with a 'floating' tread stair with wire guard rails. New structural steel beams and a post were needed to carry the load on the 2nd and third floors, but to the homeowner, the investment was totally worth it. The homeowners saved money by keeping the arrangement of the rear exterior wall, instead of adding additional cost of changing windows and structure on that wall. The exterior windows and sliding glass door were then important to fold into the kitchen design informing and working with the new kitchen layout.

The homeowners chose a custom color for the cabinets which introduced a personal expression into the design. Simple, clean lines, were important, but the homeowner did not want to go too far in the modern direction because they did not want a cold, antiseptic aesthetic.

The kitchen layout includes an island, which is edged on one side by the modern stair. The island is perfect for the homeowners as it still creates separate cooking and entertaining zones in the compact kitchen. Narrow full-height pantry cabinets takes advantage of wall space without extending too far into the kitchen and taking up valuable circulation and seating space around the island.

In the end, the kitchen is bright and airy, and connects seamlessly to the front dining room. It provides a great entertaining and cooking space connected directly to the rear urban yard and met the client's high demands for an aesthetic that is both personal and current. The homeowners are ecstatic about the completed project and especially enjoyed the year of cooking on their own during Covid. Now they are excited as the world opens up to all the exciting times to come with friends and family in their new kitchen.

This project was a major transformation from a builder's outdated kitchen to a reimagined space, with a big island, expanded kitchen space, laundry and enlarged powder room with added shower. Check out the before photos compared to the new!

Kitchen design combined a small existing kitchen with an adjacent dining room space to create a new grand kitchen with central island. The new kitchen has become the central gathering space in the house. White perimeter cabinets brightening up the space that is located at the center of the house. The renovation opened up the wall to the family room creating more of a great room feel. The original living room at the front of the house was re-purposed as the formal dining room, as the family room had become the place for family and friends gathering. There was an existing banquet seating area that was re-built with new alder wood stained to match the island cabinetry. Homeowner wanted the main sink with a view, so it was located in the island facing out towards the windows in the family room and banquet seating area. The kitchen included a bar area which provides convenient access from the family room space.
