Well Dad, I don’t really know what to say. I’ve waited to do this project for years until I thought I was good enough to make something you deserve. I finally realized I may never get to that point so I started anyway. This was an emotional, cathartic, and rewarding project. I know you would have been so proud of it. | The urn and frames (I made 4 frames so we all get one) are made from 1 board of hand picked curly walnut so they are a matched set. The urn has a quilted maple base and accents. A brass pin with an ebony k**b keeps the lid and base secure. I love and miss you, Dad!

I’ve recently started making full scale mockups of some of my projects using cardboard and hot glue. It’s made such a difference and has really helped eliminate the fear of making decisions about design or scale because I don’t have to waste anything. In this case, I had this serving tray that’s been sitting in a box so I want to make it into a small display stand for our craft shows. 30 minutes and some junk cardboard later, I have a design I am happy with. I obviously didn’t come up with this but I’ve just adopted the method.

I experimented with some new things on this project. It was my first time doing a bent lamination using my vacuum bag. The brass standoff rods and “hooks” were a pivot from my original plan which was an epic fail. I think I recovered given the circumstances. As a learning piece I am pretty happy with it.
