This is why, parking cars under a tree kills it (soil compaction). "Mulch volcanoes" (piling mulch against the trunk) rot the bark. Adding just a few inches of extra dirt over the root zone can actually suffocate a mature tree.

During a storm, the wind can’t blow through the branches, so it pushes against the whole tree—often leading to uprooting or major limb failure.
