“You hate to see history disappear,” said Adam Roskowski, owner of Rosko’s Brew House in Williamsport. That was his motivation for buying the building now housing his craft beer pub at 601 Pine Street. After being vacant for years, Adam was keen to buy the Victorian – not just because of its...

On this day in local history — March 9, 1859

The Williamsport Gas Company was officially incorporated by the Pennsylvania Legislature, bringing modern gas street lighting to Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Later that year, the city’s streets were illuminated for the first time — transforming nighttime life and marking a major step in Williamsport’s modernization.

Moments like this shaped the buildings and neighborhoods we see today.

Cow in a Sewer Trench
Top news from Williamsport, Evening News, Page 1 on November 5, 1895

"About 7:25 o'clock last night a cow belonging to Charles A. Quiggle fell into a sewer trench at the corner of Louisa and Cherry Streets, and it was only after much hard work by a rescuing party that the animal was gotten out.
At the point mentioned, no light was displayed, nor was the dangerous place fenced off. Koons Brothers have charge of the work and Sunday night had lanterns out, but there were none there last night. It was about time that contractors are made to live up to the city laws. A few heavy fines would probably have the desired effect."

On this day in history — March 6, 1933

Just two days after taking office, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared a nationwide “bank holiday.” All banking transactions stopped while the government stabilized the financial system and inspected banks before reopening them.

Moments like this shaped the history of the buildings, businesses, and properties around us.

Edit: Mark Avery identified the house as 317 Allegheny Street (see photo of the "now" below")

Jersey Shore People - This photo is marked as begin from Jersey Shore during the 1936 flood. Anyone know where this house is? Many houses have turrets, but I haven't been able to find one that is located in front of a build-out (marked by the arrow) like this one.

The Fantasy Island Airplane was born in Williamsport, PA, or at least the engines were.

The 1967 Grumman Widgeon G-44, famous as "de plane" from Fantasy Island (1977-1984), was the last of its kind built, featuring two Lycoming R680-E3 engines, engines that were built in Williamsport, PA by Lycoming.

Famous owner before the show:
Before the show, the was owned by author Richard Bach, known for writing Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

During the show:
Almost all of the footage of the plane used throughout the series and films was shot in one day and recycled over the entire run. During the filming of the actual episodes, the guests climbed out of a papier-mâché and plywood mock-up of the back of the plane, or so the internet says.

After the show:
The aircraft was later rented or sold and subsequently used for drug smuggling, leading to its seizure by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics. It again fell into the hands of other drug smugglers and was eventually confiscated and sold again.
In the 1990s, it was repainted deep red, so it is not as recognizable as De Plane of the television series. It was owned by the Ozarks Auto Show, Inc. The plane was sold again at the 38th annual Branson Collector Car Auction on April 16, 2016, to an undisclosed buyer for $275,000.

Wouldn't it be cool if it showed up for a local air show someday?
