I’m reassessing what the hell I’ve been up to since 2016. Since my work in progress posts end up mostly being a record for my own thinking they tend to obscure the results. Since I’m in progress on some work right now I thought I would post a series of images of recent and past work to clear the slate a bit. Let me know if you have any questions.

tools for living ⚒- outdoor dining In teak and bronze with a view of a Richard Serra Monolith - light cast through the seams of the table surface project and interact with a similarly patterned dining terrace. The components are compressible for compact shipping and redeployment and fit in the trunk of my car

detail edits - last post on this piece for a while - I PROMISE! I’m pretty thrilled with the composite behavior of the teak and bronze assembly where the structural qualities of each material perform as a system - following the grain of the teak punctuated by precise oriented moments of bronze hardware. This is headed off for delivery next week so please stop in to have a 👀 and say hello tomorrow!

“Be an axis” - Edmund Bacon - I’m trying to pin down where I heard this quote. I thought it was in his book Design of Cities or maybe it was from a lecture? While at a classmate was in a band that would play at happy hour and owned Edmund Bacon son’s old drum set (or at least that was the story). This son was actually Kevin Bacon so that puts me somewhere around 2-3 degrees of separation? 🤔 @ Kent, Ohio

subassembly prefabrication - I made a make shift kiln to accelerate the sluggish curing of the finish. Growing up we had two tables in our house. My dad referred to them affectionately as “the rosewood table” and “the teak table” the designs were relatively understated /non descriptive mid-century/danish modern. He would camp out on the teak table and set up his work computer to code through the night regularly. I wish he could talk to me about this piece now. @ Kent, Ohio

in nature at first glance reduces both halves to be exact equals although no two pieces are ever exactly the same as much as we may try even with most advanced tools available. Subtle shifts from axis increase stability of the whole composite system. I took a seminar from Peter McCleary based on structural thinking from his colleague We endlessly constructed tensile columns in rotation that achieve balance through symmetries of asymmetric angular rotation it was a blast and his lectures and discussions were memorable. One day to introduce metal as a textile he brought in a book titled “textile techniques in metal” I actually grew up looking at this book because my mom - a fiber artist working with metals was included in this book so it was fun to let Peter know.
