Nault Architects, Inc.

Nault Architects, Inc. The firm of Nault Architects Inc is now in its 135th year of operation, during which time it has established a solid reputation with many New England clients.

Over the years, we have come to specialize in the design of municipal, education, and institutional architecture, involving new construction, renovations and additions. The majority of our projects range in construction cost between $100K and $2 Million, and are generally renovation or repair in nature. We also typically have a small number of projects between $2 Million and $10 Million, and will

occasionally have a project over $10 Million. Our client list is very diverse and we currently hold 9 House Doctor contracts in Massachusetts, ensuring we maintain a workload of a variety of projects in size and complexity. Most of our clients are public entities, including a number of State Colleges and Universities (Umass Amherst, Worcester State University, Berkshire Community College, Umass Dartmouth, etc), state funded housing authorities, and local towns and cities. Our private work is mostly limited to higher education, which coincides with our experience on the public side. The staff at Nault Architects consists of six employees; three registered architects in Massachusetts, another who is eligible for registration; a post graduate working towards registration, and an intern. Our staff is our most valuable asset and our core employees have been with the firm most, if not all, of their careers. Steve VanDyke is the fifth owner and purchased the firm in 2003 after joining in 1988. Senior Architects Jennifer Pelletier and Mark Zuffante joined the firm in 1998 and 2002 respectively. Justin Harrington has been with the firm over 12 years and Alexis Noel almost 4 years. If you are looking for our website, look no more, as we do not have one. We have been very successful over the years procuring work by our reputation alone and have not found the need (or the time) to produce one. So for now, we are trying out this format for people to get a bit of information about us.

We are excited to have designed another great project with Assumption University! A new on-campus Pub! This new pub is in the second floor of Hagan Campus Center and will be a great place to hang out, play games, and enjoy friends on campus. Renovations are now underway (thanks to Lauring Construction) and we are looking forward to sharing the after photos in a few months!

20 years ago Steve became the 5th Owner of Nault Architects. Thought we'd share this blast from the past photo of Mark, Steve and Jen, from Herman's retirement party that month, to celebrate those 20 years!

So far 2023 brings lots of news here at Nault!

First, we’d like to welcome TWO new full-time employees to our team! Elias Christo joined us this past February. He comes with a Master of Architecture from RWU and has been working in private residential for the past 3 years. Quoc Le joined us last week and he comes with over 25 years of extensive detailing and design experience in private and public commercial architecture. Both are working towards licensure in the next few years and are great additions to our team. We are very excited to have them join us!

Second, we have some big milestones to shout out! Steve VanDyke, our President and Owner, celebrates 35 years with Nault this month. This Summer 2023 also celebrates 20 years of Steve’s ownership of Nault Architects as the 5th owner of the firm. Jennifer Pelletier, Sr Architect, also celebrates a milestone of 25 years with Nault Architects this month. Mark Zuffante, Sr. Architect, celebrates 21 years this month too (sorry we forgot to shout out your 20-year milestone last year Mark!). All three started at Nault as interns, and as they say…. the rest is history.

Additionally, Justin Harrington retired at the end of December, after a 16-year career with us at Nault Architects, but don’t fear, he couldn’t let it all go, so he is still working for us on select projects in his retirement.

Also, there have been some new faces with our college interns. Morgan Dupont, who interned with us for her second Wentworth co-op since January has gone back to school, and Luana de Mesquita has joined us as our Summer intern for her first Wentworth co-op.

And finally, in sad news, for those that aren’t aware yet, we want to inform you of the passing of Herman Bouwman, this past January, who was the 4th owner of Nault Architects from 1986-2003. He had a wealth of knowledge and had an impressive journey through his career. Herman was Steve’s mentor for Steve’s first 15 years at Nault prior to purchasing this firm from Herman.

A few before and after photos of a recently completed entry renovation at UMASS Dartmouth Law School.

The building that currently houses the UMass School of Law was constructed in 1993 and most of the building remained the same as the day is was built, including the main entry space. The School of Law wanted to update the entry space everyone enters through, creating a “Living room” feel. A donation was made to renovate this space, creating an inviting, comfortable and classy multipurpose-purpose room for the students and staff. The new design took all of these items into careful consideration and a cohesive space was creating with all new finished, a tailored furniture design and a classic yet flexible lighting design to compliment any function they wish to host.

The lobby of this 1896 classroom building at Fitchburg State University needed some updating as part of a multi-phase large renovation project. When researching to find documents from when the building was built (there were not any drawings unfortunately), we came across the photo of the lobby in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, we soon realized that all that original plaster ceiling detailing was removed during some past renovation. The design goal was to modernize the lobby, while respecting the past, and in doing so, re-creating some of the original look, while incorporating all of the MEP/FP systems of today. The lobby is currently mid construction, but coming along very well.

Worcester Senior Center - Fitness Center and Activity Room are well underway. Transforming an abandoned portion of a building that was built almost 100 years ago has challenges... and rewards.

Before, during, and rendering. After photo will be coming in a few months!

Hubbardston Public Library was constructed in 1874-75 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was originally roofed with three different colored slates in an ornate pattern, as evidenced by an original photograph and slates that still remained on the tower. Unfortunately at some point (prior to being accepted to the National Register), the main roof had been re-roofed with asphalt shingles. As part of this project, we reviewed options and costs to re-roof the building using asphalt shingles, synthetic slates, or natural slate. Ultimately, the town selected the natural slate to restore the original aesthetics and increase the lifespan of the new roof, and to repair the slates on the tower. Titan Roofing did a fantastic job with the slate and copper work.
