🌿 MINI FOOD FOREST 🌿 This is design 2 of 2 for a suburban client of mine desiring to make more thoughtful use of her existing garden spaces to provide food + habitat for pollinators, while also generating some cut flowers + edibles for her household! She moved to her residence within the past year and left years and years of gardens behind when she did. She wanted the designs I dreamt up to be a gift to herself; a way of creating new memories and new gardens at her new place. She and I are thrilled with the design that sprung forth and I look forward to getting photos of it as it matures with time 🥰.

🦋🐝🐦 This design is populated with 100% native vegetation; boasting 4 types of edible fruit as well as edible seeds, grains, and herbs that all work in community with one another to provide a regenerative, edible, pollinator paradise meant to serve EVERYONE (humans and wildlife alike)!

🌻 OHIO CLASSES + EVENTS 🌻 I'm elated to share when I'll be speaking, vending, teaching, and hosting tours all throughout the summer months and I so look forward to connecting with everyone who plans on coming out to one or more! I'm passionate about making gardening + homesteading attainable for everyone and can't wait to share that passion in a myriad of ways in the coming weeks and months. The goal on my 1-acre homestead is to generate 80% of the resources needed to sustain our existence by 2032 and I "come alive" helping others grow more of their own food; whether you reside in an urban, suburban or rural setting!

🌈 EVENTS: No registration is required for the events and they are FREE to attend!

Tours and the "Backyard Chickens" + "Composting 101" take place on my 1-acre homestead in Xenia, OH (address info will be sent out the week of the class/ tour). 🌈 JUNE TOURS 🌈 Yesterday's food forest + homestead tour and "Garden With Me" class left me soaring with connectedness and hope! I spend the bulk of my time on my homestead in relative silence and solitude and it's always such a joyous occasion to be able to share the beautiful abundance that surrounds me with such thoughtful, open-minded humans! Sadly, the PM tour had to be cancelled due to rain, but it was a joy to get to spend the day with the 30+ people who came out for the morning tour and afternoon class before the rain rolled in.

🌿 WOODLAND LANDSCAPE 🌿 This 100 SF woodland pollinator landscape is nestled just outside of my client's bedroom, so that when her windows are open, the aroma of garden will be brought inside with the wind and she'll be able to enjoy the sights + sounds of all the life beckoned to the space with its biodiverse, native offerings! This little pollinator oasis is stocked with 100% native vegetation meant to provide ornamental beauty, food and medicine to my human client and her family, as well as food + habitat for pollinators and other wildlife (hooray for everyone "winning"!). Groundcovers, fungus, herbaceous perennials, grasses, shrubs, and "fertilizing" vegetation have all been included in this thoughtful garden space that is set up to be a self-sustaining system once established.

🐓 ROOSTER HARVEST 🐓 Each Christmas, we hatch out chicks with fertilized eggs from our . Statistically, 50% are likely to be male and when too many roosters are present within a flock, EVERYONE is unhappy. We've found that 1 rooster per 10-12 hens seems to keep everyone in happy balance. Once the Christmas roos are about 5 months old, we harvest them and store them in the freezer for future meals. The undesirable organs + feathers are placed in the compost pile to be churned into nutrient-dense compost that will then be fed to the plants that feed the humans + animals on our homestead; and so the truly regenerative, sustainable cycle continues on and on each year. 

🐣 This past year, 7 of the 11 eggs that hatched on Christmas were roos, so yesterday, my boys and I harvested them together in our backyard. My children have been exposed to all food production and harvesting practices (animal + plant-based) their entire lives and it's an honor to have them by my side taking every step of the homesteading journey with me. It's soul-satisfying knowing they'll enter adulthood with skills I've spent all of my adult years accumulating and it's deeply meaningful consuming food whose nutrients I know the exact, as-local-as-it-gets origins of! 

💚 I never "look forward to" days like yesterday, but every bit of it was thoughtful, held meaning, and gave back to our homestead and Earth 🌍. I'm eternally grateful.

💚 IN-GARDEN CLASS 💚 This year, I'll be offering up a series of hands-on workshops taking place on my and in my front yard  ! The second one of the year will take place in between June's homestead tours and will cover the basics of how to grow more of your own food (annuals + perennials). I'll discuss all the various ways to grow the foods you're looking to add to your garden, yard (or patio!), and will highlight the topics discussed with real-world examples from my front yard turned food production oasis 🌈! I'll demonstrate some gardening basics as well as some "higher level" skills too, like seed-starting, companion planting, regenerative gardening maintenance, organic pest + disease control and so much more! If I don't cover something you're wondering about, just ask while you're here and I'll go over whatever information you're looking to gain. My full line of garden design books will be available that day too, should you like a plan to operate from when installing your future garden(s)!

🌾 EDIBLE HEDGE 🌾 This deer-resistant hedge was design 2 of 2 commissioned by my client, a soon-to-be-retired Fire Chief who desires to spend his retirement growing food for his 12 children and their families. His loving, nurturing mission and passion for sustainability was deeply touching. What a joy it was to design for him!

🦌 This mostly-native design includes 4 deer-resistant varieties of berry-producing shrubs + bushes and their surrounding "community" of plants meant to support their life AND "give back" to the native ecosystem. Wildflowers, edible pest-repelling plantings, "fertilizing" vegetation, and edible groundcover surround + support the main food-producers in the space, but also work to provide for my client and his loved ones. Everyone (people + nature) can be cared for by the plantings in our gardens, yards, and homesteads and it warms my heart to know that these designs will be providing abundantly for everyone in the not-too-distant future!

🌈 JUNE TOURS 🌈 The past two months, I've welcomed over 100 thoughtful humans to tour my homestead and look forward to spending time with everyone planning to come out for June's tours and/ or mid-day class! I've spent the past 4 years transforming my once grassy-covered acre into a bountiful homestead haven that will ultimately provide 80% of the resources needed to sustain our existence. I've done it solo as a testament to what one person can do on one income, alongside working and "living life." We'll begin the tour in my 5000 SF front yard , and then meander over to the mushroom gardens, 5000 SF chicken food forest, fruit + nut orchard, earth-sheltered greenhouse/ rabbit warren where I raise my does in a colony, and finish the tour in the deer-resistant berry patch.
