We spent the morning wandering around Williams, Arizona, with one very important mission: photograph every cool sign we could find. Neon signs, motel signs, Route 66 signs, signs that have probably been hanging there longer than we’ve been alive. Every time we thought we were finished, we’d turn a corner and spot another one demanding a photo. Williams is dangerous if you love old Americana and have a camera. You can go out for a quick morning walk and come back three hours later with 400 photos and absolutely no idea where the time went.

100 years of Route 66 and somehow the old road still knows how to steal the show. We took this photograph in Williams, Arizona, one of our favourite towns along the Mother Road. Neon signs, classic motels, old storefronts and more Route 66 history than you can fit in the camera roll. We could wander around Williams for hours with a coffee in one hand and a camera in the other, although judging by the number of photos we came home with, we probably did. Here’s to 100 years of Route 66 and all those miles still waiting to be explored.

One thing you see plenty of in Williams, Arizona is motorcycles parked outside motel rooms, with bikers stopping for the night while travelling the Mother Road. There’s something brilliantly Route 66 about seeing a row of bikes lined up outside those old roadside motels, ready for another day on the highway. We’re guessing the morning routine is coffee, check the bike, pack the bags and argue over who snores the loudest through a motel wall.

We had a great drive into Saguaro National Park, parked up and headed off on foot in search of some seriously impressive saguaros. It was hot, very hot, and after a while we were starting to wonder if the cactus were enjoying watching us slowly melt. But every sweaty step was worth it. The huge saguaros, rugged mountains and endless desert scenery were absolutely incredible. We took plenty of photos along the way, including this one, which is now available as a print in our Etsy shop.

We enjoyed the drive from Meadview to Grand Canyon West, watching the scenery slowly change along the way. We left behind the rugged mountains and huge Joshua trees around Meadview and gradually found ourselves surrounded by wide open, almost flat desert. It’s amazing how quickly the landscape can change out here, and it made the drive just as memorable as arriving at Grand Canyon West.

Even the mountains in Meadview have a good gossip. One’s probably saying, “Did you see those two wandering around with cameras again?” while the other replies, “Yep, they’ve taken 47 photos of the same Joshua tree and they’re still not finished.” We’ll just leave them to it. Mountains have been here for millions of years, so they’ve definitely got plenty to talk about.

This massive Joshua tree has clearly found the best seat in Meadview. Just chilling in the Arizona desert with the mountains behind it, soaking up the sunshine and looking like it hasn’t had a stressful day in about 200 years. Meanwhile, we’re wandering around taking far too many photos of it from every possible angle. Can’t blame us though, Joshua trees are ridiculously photogenic.

Every time we visit Cabazon, those dinosaurs somehow end up having another photoshoot. We’ve photographed them in sunshine, blue skies, moody clouds and probably from every angle except underneath their toes. At this point they must recognise us as the couple who keeps turning up with cameras instead of snacks. If you love these legendary roadside giants as much as we do, pop over to our Etsy shop where our Cabazon dinosaur digital prints are waiting for their next home.

We headed out to a ranch for something to eat and somehow ended up spending the evening listening to a singing cowboy. Good food, country music and a proper ranch setting, we were only missing a horse tied up outside and a dramatic ride off into the sunset. Not our usual night out, but definitely one of the best.
