MAY is GARDENIA MONTH

Gardenia Care and Considerations.....

One of the most widely planted landscape shrubs across the South is gardenias. Consider these key factors to optimize landscape performance:

Bed Preparation. Well, drained raised beds are needed for gardenias. They can suffer from occasional root rot issues in the landscape due to over-irrigation/excessive rainfall when landscape bed preparation is not adequate.

Soil pH. The recommended soil pH is 5.0-5.5. This is considered moderately to strongly acid. Nutrient availability and root growth problems occur when soil pH climbs above 6.0 and become a major problem at soil pH above 6.5.

Monitor Planting Depth. Be careful about piling mulch around the base of the stems, The root ball should be a little higher than the soil line when planted in the ground. Always allow for soil settling.

Irrigation Management. “Not too wet; not too dry” – that’s what’s needed. Try to maintain soil moisture uniformity. A slightly stressed gardenia will decline rapidly when overwatered. Watering once a week during late spring through midfall should be sufficient when rainfall is lacking.

Fertilizer. Gardenias need a moderate amount of nitrogen fertilizer. Apply a slow-release fertilizer shortly after spring bloom. Iron may be required because these are acid soil loving plants. Foliar or soil applications of fertilizer with iron can help prevent yellowing of leaves – known as interveinal chlorosis – and other nutrient deficiencies caused by high soil pH, especially with dwarf gardenias. An Epsom salt application once annually may also provide improved foliage color to gardenias.

Garden Hydrangea Notes for March and April

Foliage growth on garden hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) is commencing. After leaves emerge, prune out any dead wood. Dead wood will likely be moderate again this spring after the teen and single digit temperatures across the South in mid January. Fertilize soon with a slow release ornamental / landscape fertilizer. Do not do a height reduction pruning on these - on most garden hydrangeas flower buds for this year were set last year (late summer, fall).

Keep in mind that we will once again this year see fewer blooms on garden hydrangea varieties due to the cold weather in January damaging the flower buds that were set last fall. Some garden hydrangeas —such as the Endless Summer® varieties — bloom on new wood in addition to old wood, so these will be more will likely to flower during the coming April—July bloom season.

(image - new growth is obvious. Dead wood should be removed soon)

Hydrangea paniculata Pruning

Popular varieties of these type hydrangeas include Limelight and Little Lime®. As with garden hydrangeas, there are frequent questions on the best way to
prune panicle-type hydrangeas.

Hydrangea paniculata bloom on growth produced in the spring. Flowering occurs
June into the early fall. Since these bloom on current year’s growth, height
reduction pruning can be done during the fall and can also be done now (late
winter, early spring).

Late winter, early spring pruning will encourage a tighter growing habit and
more lateral branching which will result in an increased number of flowers
produced during the summer.

Hydrangea paniculata varieties have chilling requirements and usually leaf
out 2-4 weeks after garden type hydrangeas. Fertilizer application at leaf out
helps produce more spring growth which will result in more summer blooms.
