9th–24th June — I’ll be on holiday, and all enquiries will be answered when I’m back.

As I wrap up my last week before heading away, I just want to say a genuine thank you. Every job either big or small has helped me follow my passion and build this new chapter with Sycamore Gardening. I’m so grateful to all my clients for trusting me with your gardens, and to the communities and charities who’ve welcomed me in to share the joy of gardening with more people across Hartlepool.

I’ll be hitting the ground running again when I return, but for now, here are a few photos from my final “job” before the break… looking after my own garden, where the flowers have very rudely decided to burst into bloom just as we go away!

And while I’m gone, don’t forget your June tasks:
• Deadhead early perennials for a second flush
• Take softwood cuttings
• Keep feeding and watering those beautiful summer annuals

See you soon 🌻

Popped down to the community garden for a few hours today to tidy up and give the plants and veg a good feed while the kids were keeping dry. Always nice to keep things ticking over for everyone and I finally got to break in the new Sycamore Gardening workwear too!

Donations for the garden are always welcomed! Voices Of Hartlepool

🌿 What to Expect at a Design Consultation (and why you don’t need to feel embarrassed)

A lot of people tell me the same thing before a consultation:

“I’m embarrassed about the garden.”
“I don’t know where to start.”
“I’m not very good with plants.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company.

My last post touched on how my Mental Health First Aider background shapes the way I work and this is exactly where it matters. A design consultation isn’t about judging your garden. It’s about understanding you, your space, and what you want your garden to do for your wellbeing.

Here’s what actually happens:

We walk the garden together, no pressure, no rush. You show me what you like, what frustrates you, and what you dream of changing.

I look at the science: soil, light, plant health, layout, and how the space behaves through the seasons.

We talk about style, even if you don’t know the words for it yet. Modern, cottage, Mediterranean, wildlife‑friendly… or simply “I like tall plants and soft colours.”

You learn as we go, most people finish the consultation feeling more confident, more informed, and more excited about their garden than when we started.

You’re listened to, your goals, your lifestyle, your comfort level, your budget. It all matters.

A consultation can be part of a full design process, where I take everything we discuss and turn it into a tailored planting design for your borders, pots, or full front‑of‑house transformation.

Or it can be a standalone service, perfect if you want to understand your garden better, learn which styles suit your home, or simply get clear, science‑led advice without committing to a full design.

Either way, a consultation is a conversation, not a test.
It’s a chance to explore ideas, understand what’s possible, and build a plan that feels right for you and your home.

Your garden doesn’t need to be perfect before you invite me in.
It just needs to be yours.

If you’re thinking about refreshing your space this year, a design consultation is the best first step, supportive, practical, and completely tailored to you.

Most people don’t immediately link gardening with mental health but for me, they’ve always been connected.

I’m still a qualified Mental Health First Aider, and that experience continues to shape the way I work every single day. It taught me the power of being listened to, and how much confidence people gain when they feel genuinely heard.

That’s why, at Sycamore Gardening, we don’t just look at plants but we listen to people.

What they need from their space.
What helps them feel calmer.
What makes their garden feel like theirs.

The graphic below shares a few snippets from past recommendations and reviews, from my previous professional roles and from my current work with Sycamore Gardening. They all highlight the same theme: a people‑centred, calm, supportive approach that carries through everything I do.

Your garden should support your wellbeing as much as your home does.

And that starts with a conversation.

A huge thank you to Voices Of Hartlepool for having me in the community garden last week. The children were amazing, full of questions, creativity and enthusiasm and the space is becoming something really special. I’m really excited to keep working with the team as the garden continues to grow.

The community garden is always grateful for donations to keep the garden going, so if you’re able to contribute anything at all, it makes a real difference!

Keeping your garden healthy isn’t always straightforward and when plants start to struggle, the cause isn’t always obvious. That’s where a proper, science‑led diagnostic makes all the difference.

Here’s what’s included in my Plant Health Diagnostics service:

🪲 Pest & Disease Identification
From aphids and vine weevil to rust, mildew and leaf spot many issues look similar on the surface. I identify exactly what’s affecting your plants so you’re not guessing or treating the wrong thing. Early identification stops problems spreading through borders and containers.

🌱 Soil & pH Testing
Soil health is the foundation of every successful garden. I test pH, assess structure, and look at moisture and nutrient balance to understand what your plants are really growing in. This is often the key to unlocking better growth, stronger colour, and healthier roots.

🔍 Root Cause Diagnosis
Sometimes the issue isn’t a pest or disease at all, it’s planting depth, compaction, shade stress, watering patterns, or simple environmental mismatch. I look at the whole picture to find the true cause behind declining plants, not just the symptoms.

🧪 Treatment & Care Plans
Once we know what’s going on, I create a clear, tailored plan to help your plants recover. This may include feeding schedules, pruning guidance, treatment options, or changes to soil and care routines. No guesswork, just a practical, evidence‑based path to healthier plants.

If you’ve got something in the garden that’s not thriving, yellowing, wilting, or just “not right”, a diagnostic visit can save time, money, and whole borders.

Send a message if you’d like to book a Plant Health Diagnostic for your garden.

One thing that often surprises people is just how much goes into creating a planting design, pot scheme, border refresh or full front‑of‑house transformation. It isn’t just choosing plants that look nice together. It’s soil science, sunlight mapping, plant behaviour, colour theory, long‑term structure, and a lot of careful planning.

To make the whole thing feel less mysterious, I’ve broken the process down into six simple steps. This is the exact method I use for every design project — whether it’s a single border or a full garden refresh.

1. Initial Chat & Brief
We start with a friendly conversation about what you want from your space such as colours you love, styles you’re drawn to, any problem areas, and how you use the garden day‑to‑day. This helps me understand your goals before I even step foot on site.

2. Site Visit & Assessment
This is where the science comes in. I look at soil type, drainage, aspect, microclimates, existing planting, shade patterns and any plant‑health issues. Good design starts with understanding the environment properly.

3. Design Concepts & Planting Plan
Using everything gathered from the assessment, I create a tailored design concept. This includes plant choices, colour themes, structure, textures, and seasonal interest — all chosen to suit your home, your lifestyle, and your garden’s conditions.

4. Final Design & Costing
Once you’re happy with the concept, I refine it into a final design with clear pricing. No surprises, no guesswork — just a transparent plan that shows exactly what you’re getting.

5. Installation / Planting Day
This is the exciting part. I source high‑quality plants, prepare the ground properly, and install everything with care. The aim is to leave you with a garden that looks beautiful from day one and continues to thrive.

6. Aftercare & Follow‑Up
Plants aren’t furniture — they grow, settle, and change. I check in after installation to make sure everything is establishing well and offer simple aftercare guidance so your new planting stays healthy long‑term.

A quick reassurance - You’re not tied into every stage.
Because the process is built on proper assessment and plant science, each step stands on its own. You can stop at the consultation, take the design to install yourself, or let me handle the full transformation, whatever suits your project and budget.

If you’ve been thinking about refreshing your borders, upgrading your pots, or giving your front‑of‑house a proper lift, this is the process we’ll follow. Clear, science‑led, and completely tailored to your home.

Putting together some new pots over the weekend, so I filmed a quick guide on the “thriller, filler, spiller” method.

It’s the simplest way to create a balanced, intentional display in containers using annuals. Height, body, and trailing plants all working together.

If you’d like help choosing plants or designing your own pots for summer, just drop me a message.
