Footing Design Types

1. Isolated Footing (Pad Footing)

Most common and economical type.

Used when a single column carries load and the
soil has good bearing capacity.

Shape: Usually square or rectangular.

Simple reinforcement (main bars in both directions at bottom).

Best for lightly loaded structures with widely spaced columns.

2. Combined Footing

Used when two columns are close to each other
(spacing is small) or one column is near the property line.

Shape: Rectangular or Trapezoidal (to distribute pressure uniformly).

Transfers load from two columns to the soil.

Requires more reinforcement and careful design to avoid eccentricity.

3. Raft / Mat Foundation

A large continuous reinforced concrete slab that supports multiple columns or the entire building.

Used when:
Soil bearing capacity is very low.

Columns are closely spaced.
Differential settlement needs to be minimized.

Most expensive but very stable. Reinforcement is provided in a grid pattern (top + bottom steel).

Summary:

Isolated → One column, good soil → Cheapest

Combined → Two nearby columns → Moderate

Raft → Many columns, weak soil → Most reliable
