21 days ago, this lawn looked ruined.

Now look at it.

This lawn was renovated on 13th May, came through a heatwave, and recovered fast with proper aftercare.

A sprinkler and timer were used every 6 hours for 15 minutes while the new seed established.

Still not the finished result, but this shows how much watering and aftercare matter after a lawn renovation.

They said we’d “kiss this grass goodbye”…

3 weeks later, it’s still here.

This lawn was renovated on 13th May, came through a heatwave, and recovered fast with proper aftercare.

A sprinkler and timer were used every 6 hours for 15 minutes while the new seed established.

Still not the finished result, but this shows the power of automated watering after a lawn renovation.

We made this lawn look worse on purpose.

This is day one of a proper lawn renovation. The lawn was cut low, scarified to remove moss and thatch, cleaned up, aerated, overseeded and topdressed to give the new seed the best chance of coming through properly.

It looks rough now, but that is normal. This is the reset stage.

Result update in 6 weeks.

One of the most useful tools for bigger lawn renovations.

This travelling sprinkler follows the hose across the lawn, giving much more even coverage without constantly moving sprinklers around by hand.

After scarifying, aerating and overseeding, watering is where a lot of renovations either succeed or fail. The seed needs consistent moisture, especially through warm, dry weather and on Essex clay.

Simple idea and a small investment, but it makes a big difference on larger lawns and saves so much time not having to move a sprinkler around manually, and is great for longterm watering during the summer.

This compost spreader has quickly become one of my favourite tools for lawn renovations.

After scarifying, aerating and overseeding, a light compost topdressing helps improve seed contact, hold moisture around the new seed, and support the soil as the lawn recovers.

It also gives a much more even finish than trying to throw compost with a spade, especially across larger lawns.

Simple tool, big difference.

3 weeks after renovation and this lawn is starting to fill in nicely.

With the warmer weather coming, keeping the seed and young grass watered is the difference between a decent result and a proper recovery. Little and often is the key at this stage, especially on dry Essex clay.

The hard work was done with the renovation, but the aftercare is what gets it across the line.

Renovation week, but the watering plan is just as important as the scarifying, aerating and seeding.

With the warmer weather coming, these timed sprinklers are set up to keep the new seed consistently moist through germination. Letting seed dry out is one of the quickest ways to ruin a renovation, especially on dry, compacted Essex clay.

A good renovation does not finish when the tools go back in the van. The aftercare is what turns the work into a thicker, greener lawn.
