Late summer sun is the best...the days are cooling, and the light looks so beautiful spilling over native plants and the grasses give the whole image motion. Anise hyssop, little bluestem, western sunflower, common milkweed, and stiff goldenrod bloom along the front walkway at this lawn-free landscape.

In my own urban Minnesota garden, native round-lobed hepatica has been the surest sign of spring actually being here. 😍 I only have one, and it brings me so much joy.

Our crew began work this past week, although slowly. By and large it's too soon to do maintenance work, so this time of year we focus mostly on hardscapes (stone work and woodwork) and prepping sites for plants that will become available a bit later in the season.

I'm incredibly proud to present the faces behind all the work we do at Hothouse Horticulture, from left to right behind me: (names removed for privacy). We had a meal together last night to celebrate our most successful season to date. I couldn't be more grateful for such a great team. They all give 110% every day, care about attention to craftsmanship and detail, contribute ideas all the time, are fun to work with, and teach me tons from their own experiences. It's truly a joy to work with this crew.

When your mom operates a landscaping business, playing outside can be more fun. My 11 year old did a good job with the stone mason's prayer--2 over 1, 1 over 2--on this little stone wall and wanted to chat about how the build went for them afterward. Also, for the record, this is an LGBTQ+ cat fort. 😍🥰
