Bug hotels are a great way to provide additional safe hideaways for insects in our gardens. If you provide one with lots of different sized holes bees will love them. Other insects such as ladybirds may also use them. This 14-spot ladybird was spotted in Alexandra Road this week.

Our homes and gardens are so important for wildlife. This terrace bird box was put up to make space for the local house sparrows - birds don't read the books....blue t**s moved in and are now feeding chicks, and now a blackbird has joined them and made its nest on top (see female sat on nest!). Both families currently living in harmony, although blue t**s now having to dodge trailing blackbird nest material to get to their nest hole....

Male orange-tip butterfly spotted cruising the gardens today - what a beauty!!!!!!! A female was photographed earlier in the week and they both took to feeding on this purple flower Erysimum 'Bowles's Mauve' - really recommend growing one of these as they bring colour for most of the year and the insects absolutely love it as a nectar source!!

Hopefully there will be lots more birds fledging successfully over the coming weeks - I know a lot of different bird species use ours gardens (and houses! :-)) and have been seen building nests.

As darkness falls our nocturnal wildlife becomes active on our streets and in our gardens. You may have been lucky enough to see a Hedgehog recently, out of winter hibernation and enjoying these warmer evenings. Or you may at least have seen evidence that they've been - shiny black poo!

This warm Easter weather has brought out some fascinating insects. Check out this Bee fly and its long proboscis, enabling it to take nectar from a flowering primrose.
What insects have you spotted in your garden????

These birds (Blue tit, Magpie, Collard Doves) are some of the many animals enjoying our water feature (old frying pan!). Having available water is vital and it is amazing to see what comes to enjoy it.
