How did your January go?
I’m asking for a refund 🤦‍♀️
February is a new month, Mondays are the beginning of a new week and each morning gives us a new day.
So, I’m just going to start again and pick up where I can.
Join me in a year of kindness to ourselves. Where living a somewhat organised life is part of our self care.

Toss it Tuesday - gift bags

I hear the reasoning “but I might need it one day” often when decluttering gift bags, wrapping paper and ribbon.

So this isn’t so much a “toss it” but rather a “use them up this Christmas and toss the rest - Tuesday”.

The glue starts to break down, the bags get fold creases and they start to look tatty. Not so nice for gift giving.

If you do have reservations about getting rid of perfectly good gift bags you could give them away on a free local Facebook group.

If you are still struggling to part with your collection of gift bags, you could use The Minimalist’s 20/20 rule. If I can get another one in less than 20 minutes for less than $20, then I can part with it.

5 Minute Decluttering

Hats and Caps where the focus this week. They were overflowing their container and I don’t want a second storage location. So some had to go.

There were some well worn caps at the bottom of this container. Broken peaks, snapped adjusters and some so dirty I couldn’t tell what company we were supporting.

Due to the condition of some caps, the decision what to keep was easy and this took less than five minutes to sort. It took me longer to find a garbage bag I could hide at the bottom of the bin than it did to sort the caps. Caps are a bit like kid’s art work for my family, so a little bit of timely sorting needs to happen.

You might not have an overflowing container of caps, but there is probably a small zone you can declutter in five minutes. The glove box in the car, hair bands, lipsticks, one shelf in the fridge. Getting started, staying motivated and starting again after a break only takes five minutes.

If you’re struggling with any part of your decluttering or organising journey, drop me a message or call to find out how a professional organiser can help you.

Toss it Tuesday - hats and caps

I don’t know about your home, but hats and caps seem to breed in our home.

Hats and caps are supposed to be contained in a plastic tub in our drop zone. The recent harvest delivered several new contributions to the tub and now it’s overflowing. How many caps can one farmer wear?

Removing the dirty, stained and damaged is a starting point. Then consult with the primary wearers for any that don’t fit or just feel uncomfortable.

This will be a difficult conversation in our home, but it needs to be done. Wish me luck.

Regaining control of a small space is great if you are time poor. It gives you a quick win and motivates you to keep going.

When you are feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, start small.

If you are struggling to start, finding it hard to make decisions or need an extra pair of hands, give me a call.

You can do this.
Toss those hats and caps.

Clutter magnets - the fridge door

It took me until Sunday before I got to my Toss it Tuesday and cleared my fridge door and that’s okay.

Fridge door clutter if often compromised of to-dos. Every time you go to the fridge or walk past the fridge those to-dos are calling to you. Pay that bill, call that school, pick up that dry cleaning, add those items to the grocery list.

I don’t know about you, but I have more than enough things on my mental to-do list and those extra ones on the fridge can seem like they never go away. That’s because every time I look at the fridge they are talking to me.

Declutter the fridge door. Remove the items that are no longer needed, bin them or return to where they belong.

After checking all the items on my fridge door I left only one. The docket for the dry cleaning I want my son to pick up tomorrow. Removing this clutter from my fridge makes me feel a calmer when I walk past the fridge.

If you really don’t want to reclutter the fridge door, remove the magnets. If you need visual reminders set up a pinboard inside the pantry, or another cupboard. This will remove clutter from your line of sight, but you will still have a visual reminder.

Starting your decluttering journey can be difficult, but a quick visual win can be enough to get you motivated. If you need help to realise your decluttering and organising dreams contact me to find out how easy it can be.

Toss it Tuesday - the stuff on your fridge door, not the actual door 🤣

The items on your fridge door; bills, kids art, takeaway menus, may seem innocent but the visual clutter is constantly sending “to-do” messages to your brain.

Cull, sort and store.

Kids Art: if kids art is hard to part with, either for you or the kids, use the one in - one out rule. Keep some for wrapping paper or, if the kids can cope with it, cut some up for gift tags. If sneaking the art out in a garbage bag in the middle of the night is the only option, go for it.

Bills: have as many emailed to you as possible and for the paper ones, a box or basket that you assign time to process once a week can work well and keep the visual clutter down.

Menus: use restaurant website for up to date menus, or store paper menus is a pocket binder.

Do I have anything on my fridge door?
Yes, but I keep it limited to the freezer door section and try to keep to current reminders. I give my fridge a once over every week and check the door for anything I can remove.

You’ll be amazed how a clean and clear fridge door will reduce your visual clutter.

I’m a hot mess in the kitchen. I don’t love the process of cooking and trying to come up with meals, that my still incredibly fussy teens will eat, nearly has me letting them eat toast every meal.

But, it’s a busy time for my husband and he will eat anything I cook. So with a day off to take my 15yos to an appointment, I thought I’d use the extra hour I had this morning to make some lunchbox snacks.

Banana bread and some sneaky chocolate muffins that contain nuts, dates and carrots.

Taking a few minutes to decide on the recipes and getting the ingredients out the evening before, had me ready to go as soon as I hit the kitchen.

The advice to spend a few minutes preparing for tomorrow really is gold.

Having a stocked pantry of the ingredients I use regularly helps too. But if I haven’t got something on hand I Google alternatives rather than making another trip to the shops. This is a huge time saver and helps prevent impulse buys.

If you have been thinking about organising your pantry, shopping list, meal planning or any other aspect of your kitchen now is always the best time. Contact me to discuss how a customised organising session can help you realise your kitchen dreams.
