I lived in the Bali jungle for several years, and this is the homemade bug spray I used there. It’s still my go-to for camping and as an all purpose bug spray!

🦟Homemade Bug Spray

• 30 drops geranium essential oil
• 30 drops citronella essential oil
• 20 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oil
• 20 drops lavender essential oil
• 10 drops rosemary essential oil
• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil
• 10 drops peppermint essential oil
• 10 drops cedarwood essential oil
• 10 drops neem oil
• 1 tbsp vodka or rubbing alcohol
• 1/2 cup natural witch hazel
• 1/2 cup distilled or spring water
• 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin

Add essential oils to a glass spray bottle. Add alcohol and shake well. Add witch hazel, glycerin and water. Shake again.

Give it a good shake before each use since the oils will naturally separate. Always do a patch test on your skin before applying it more broadly.

Save for camping season! 🏕️🦟

Any tips for mosquito season?

If you can grow herbs, you can make your own tea ☕️🌿 …and trust me the flavour is unparalleled!
One of my favourite parts of summer is drying herbs from the garden and creating homemade tea blends for my precious tea time. 🤭
I grow things like peppermint, lemon balm, chamomile, calendula, lavender, sage, thyme, and echinacea, then mix them with dried fruit, rose petals, or rose hips for fun seasonal blends.

A few easy blends I make every year:
🌿 “Penticton Peppermint”
Peppermint
Lemon balm
Chamomile
Calendula petals

🌙 “Okanagan Sleepytime”
Lemon balm
Chamomile
Lavender buds

🏔 “Mountain Immune Boost”
Echinacea
Elderflower or elderberries
Lemon balm
Sage
Thyme
Optional rose hips

You can comment tea and I’ll send you the link or you can read the full blog post on my website where I share:

Strawberry hack you’ll want to save 🍓

I wash mine in a salad spinner with a tablespoon of baking soda and let them soak for about 15 minutes. This helps lift surface dirt, potential pesticide residue and anything that can speed mold.

Then I give them a good spin, rinse well and air dry them on a towel completely. The biggest thing is getting rid of extra moisture before they go into the fridge.

After that, I store them in a proper container so they stay fresher longer and don’t turn mushy in a couple of days.

I’ve also created a full guide on properly washing fruits and veggies using natural solutions like vinegar and baking soda plus a deeper breakdown on pesticides, the Dirty Dozen, and produce washing methods.

You can find it on my blog, (links in bio).

Or drop a comment 🍓and I can send it to you directly!

Save this one if you buy strawberries often 🍓

Strawberry season + wild rose season = pure jam magic ✨🌹🍓

I’m a home canner, but I also follow a pretty low-sugar way of eating, so I’ve had to rethink how I make traditional jams and preserves.

Instead of relying on large amounts of sugar, I build flavour through method: using fully ripe strawberries, a longer gentle simmer and reduction to naturally concentrate sweetness. And my family will tell you, it’s the best, a jam that’s still sweet, but made with far less added sugar.

Fresh wild rose petals bring a subtle floral note and I’ll often layer in herbs or spices depending on what’s in season. It’s less about sweetness from sugar and more about depth of flavour from foraged ingredients and cooking technique.

Wild Rose & Strawberry Jam:
Ingredients
* 12 cups fresh ripe strawberries, hulled and quartered, (organic is best because strawberries are in the dirty dozen)
* 1/4 cup organic cane sugar
* 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
* 1/2 cup fresh unsprayed edible rose petals
Slow simmer until thick, glossy, and naturally sweet

Comment JAM and I’ll send the full low sugar recipe + canning method. Includes the guide: Low Sugar Canning: Creating Beautiful Flavour Beyond Just Sugar 🫙I slow cooking for natural sweetness,
🍁Use maple syrup and honey
🍓Use herbs & floral infusions,
🫚warming spices,
🍋citrus layering
🪻foraged flavour pairings,
and beautiful combinations like strawberry & rose, pear & cardamom, blueberry & juniper, peach & ginger, orange blossom & rhubarb + more.

I’m a canner who also lives a pretty low sugar lifestyle… so over the years I’ve learned how to build flavour beyond just sweetness.

Instead:

🍓Use herbs & floral infusions
🫚warming spices
🍋citrus layering
🪻foraged flavour pairings

Canning season doesn’t have a single official start date, it really depends on your climate and what you’re preserving. But generally, canning season kicks off in late spring to early summer, when the first harvests start rolling in.

In places like the Okanagan, many people consider July the true start of “full swing” canning, when stone fruits and tomatoes start coming in heavy.

Today I’m canning strawberries to kick off canning season! What do you kick off canning season with?
