The Succulent Emporium was founded in 2013 to fund alien removal and fynbos rehabilitation in our private nature reserve. Since then it has grown from selling succulents in the Western Cape to selling handmade pots as well - available country-wide.

A biggish kurinuki / sodium silicate pot also made last week. It will be ‘glazed’ with oxides for a natural look. Can’t wait to get to that point! Holding all digits it survives drying & bisque firing first 😁😁

Here’s the less glamorous side to pottery 🤦🏻‍♀️ I fired my (new to me) kiln on Thursday night, thinking I could get a bunch of alternative bonsai pots bisqued, then I could glaze, glaze fire them & still get them to the bonsai show on the weekend. No such luck. It overfired. BADLY. All my red pots came out the colour of 💩 They warped. There was bloating. They melted. Basically anything that could go wrong, did. The only thing I didn’t have? Explosions. I managed to salvage the kiln shelves with a few divots taken out of them as well as my hands while gently knocking the potable. I was so looking forward to the 2 spiky pots - they were both supposed to stand on the spikes. Now not so much! 😩 There were 4-5 pots that were salvageable out of a load of 20+ I’ve got someone coming to reprogramme the kiln controller on Friday - then you all have to hold every digit you have that my next load is a success, because otherwise…those astronauts will be finding the toys I chuck.

I went to the bonsai show to pack up my pots this morning, but it was still very much in full swing when I got there, so I decided not to & instead spent some time walking around the exhibit & taking photos of the trees. There was an extra little bonus waiting for me right at the end…one of the pots I sold last year! Always makes me so happy to see my pots planted up 🥰🥳

I set up early at the bonsai show yesterday - a bunch of pots were nabbed as I put them out. That’s what I love about the succulent & bonsai communities 😁 We’re passionate about our obsessions & when we see something we like, that hammer comes down 😂 I’m hoping to go & see the exhibit on Sunday - no trees were out yet when I was there as I was super early. The artistry on display at this annual show is always something magical to see. If you go, drop some photos! If you buy one of my pots, send me a photo of the pot planted up & I’ll give you a discount on your next one 👌🏻
