Bah Hamburg?

Some places sell more than others, no surprise there. But sometimes I don’t notice when a place isn’t selling and I keep making more coasters as I keep finding a nice variety of maps that feature it. Well, 2025 didn’t show Hamburg, Germany much love and as a result I have 6 different map coaster options of Hamburg. SIX. That’s a lot to have for someplace other than New York or Chicago, etc.

So what is it about Hamburg? I’d go there in a heartbeat, but I’m game to go anywhere I haven’t been and is relatively safe to go. Now I’m curious to hear about both the charms of Hamburg and also why maybe it doesn’t stand out to customers as much as other locations in Germany. Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone know someone with a Hamburg connection that may like some coasters? Because I have OPTIONS!

If you’re curious, here are the sources of the coasters featured:

Jefferson City, Missouri. My hometown. For years I have been thinking of how when I travel I should take coasters with me of the places I visit and take a photo. It would be good content I thought. Sigh. But I just cant be bothered to make good content. It takes time and energy and those are both things I already let this app steal from me. But I did finally toss a coaster in my duffle bag before going home to see Mom, and I did stop over by our lovely Capitol after going out to breakfast with her to snap this photo. Not the best angle, out of focus, nail polish in desperate need of a refresh, but it was cold and Mom was waiting in the car.... this photo shouldn't make the cut, but it's good enough and I think being unedited and imperfect is more my jam.

I'm from "Jeff," as the locals call it. The city all American children memorize at some point for learning state capitals (do they even do that anymore?) and then promptly forget. I'd even hazard a guess it would be in the top five of the state capitals people get wrong (nope, it's not St. Louis), but it was my world for a long stretch. And while the population has mostly stayed the same, there are hints of change, like the new Indian restaurant and a queer-owned bookstore downtown....but also so many things that feel exactly the same. If you go, be sure to stop by Central Dairy for that old ice cream parlor experience, cruise Missouri Blvd (just kidding, don't, it's boring, but it was a thing kids did to pass the time), and walk the pedestrian pathway attached to the bridge over the Missouri River and know that my Dad mixed every batch of concrete for that stretch of highway. There are many other things to do and see there too of course. But this caption is only so long and I can't linger in here or my compulsion to scroll will take over and time will be lost again.

Oh, and the map on the coaster is from 1977. The Capitol is located within that circular drive you see on the inset map at the top right on the coaster which you can then spot its perch on the main map right along the river. It's really a spectacular view. The mighty, the muddy, the Mo.

And suddenly it was November.... I've got quite a stretch of markets coming up as we hit the holiday season (and for makers we hit the marathon season). 2025 has been quite a year and among the many uncertainties has been how Q4 sales will go for small makers (when we usually make most of our income). I'm grateful for how customers keep showing up and supporting how they can. The biggest job benefit I get from this career is playing a small part in helping you find meaningful gifts for your loved ones (and getting to hear your geographic stories of connection that you share with me). I'm making as much as I can manage to try and have where you're looking for. I'd love to see you at one of my events, even just to say hey! And if you see me in December near the end of my calendar....please be patient with me as I imagine I'll be running low on energy. I don't know how Santa does it. I'm just a lone mappy elf.

MAPPY HOLIDAYS! 2025 can't steal our joy!! ❤️

Sigh (the good kind). I'm still basking in the afterglow of . I will inadequately express my gratitude here for such an amazing event, because this small caption can't fully acknowledge the hours/days/weeks of work that goes into creating and cultivating this singular, magical day of the year.

Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, vendors, and attendees. I actually got a chance to meet THE Pat Miller who brought AOTA into existence and has built its 30 year legacy - and I tried to thank her for creating something that allows businesses like mine to exist. It was this market in 2022 and the shocking success of it that allowed me to think, hey, maybe I can make a living here with this. And it's 2025 and I'm still here.

Regardless of the other events swirling around us, Del Ray turns OUT to support artists - in the rain, in the heat, in the political turmoil....they consistently show up and offer support, not just in purchases but in kind words and smiles. There are folks who seek me out year to year. Do you know how mind blowing and meaningful that is to me? One such customer is in one of these photos - you know who you are! 👊🏼 😁 Others stop by to thank me for the purchases from the year before or to say they love my newsletter. My heart is fuller than full from each and every one of these interactions.

Only 362 days until the next one! You bet I'll be counting down the days. Seriously folks, it's that good. If you've never been, mark your 2026 calendar with the first Saturday in October. You won't regret it.

And shout out to my amazing friends who became a AMO team to help my business have the best day possible. To my partner (for EVERYTHING!), to for handling inventory and breakfast delivery, to .s for incredibly speedy organizing and restocking on the fly during peak hours, and to for navigating customer requests and staffing the register when my brain began to short circuit. I'm still gobsmacked that so many people want to help and I'm getting better at accepting such help. I'm lucky to have so many wonderful people in my life.

How have I not hit the caption max yet? Oh, there it is...

I never tire of making vintage map coaster sets of DC, my home city now of almost 10 years (!!). This set from a 1971 AAA map is a custom order for new home owners whose residence is within the map extent. But when making this for them, I can't help but think of my own on-the-ground memories on the different blocks, streets, and landmarks shown.

DC is a small (area) city that is absolutely packed with history and culture and whose true vibrancy is known by those who live here, not those who just visit the national mall. If you think it's just politicians and lobbyists here, I invite you to explore this amazing place in greater depth. There are good people here. Artists and historians, entrepreneurs and civil servants, food service industry workers and transportation operators, philanthropists and volunteers, parents / families / partnerships / relationships of all types and compositions, nature lovers and urban enthusiasts, lifetime Washingtonians and new arrivals, educators and librarians, and so much more. It's a place that hundreds of thousands call home and is truly where their heart is. It's much more than the starred national capital on a US map. There's something to love for everyone who lives and visits here.

I always thought I'd go west from the Midwest, live in the mountains, do cool outdoorsy s**t, have a perpetual roofrack on my car with a rotating assortment of gear. Instead I ended up east as a city dweller that loves public transportation and exploring the urban landscape block by block. We often find ourselves in surprising places our younger versions didn't envision. Life keeps it interesting that way. Where did you think you were going vs. where you ended up?

Roma. I'm quickly falling in love with this coaster set of 6 from a 1956 Hachette World Guide of Italy. Italy was a lot of firsts for me. First time on a plane, leaving the country, being surrounded by another language, experiencing group travel as a very introverted and non-worldly 17 year old from central Missouri. I'm forever grateful my parents (who never flew or traveled abroad in their lives) helped me go and can easily say the trip changed my life. There's a whole WORLD out there. Also...there's gelato. Like, there's better ice cream out there. 🤯 That trip was also when I think I made my first ever purchase of handmade art...a small inlaid wood piece I got in Sorrento (last image). This wee bit of wall decor has traversed so many moves and homes with me and with just a glance of it can remind me of the eye-opening awe of that trip. There's a whole world out there, and I aim to capture as many bits of it that I can, hoping that these coasters can remind you of your eye-opening, awe-some travels and connections to places.

Sigh. Now I want gelato for lunch.

It's indeed the final countdown. I have just 6 markets left in 2024. And they all occur in a 10 day stretch (I am unsure how I will manage to handle that but handle it I must so any friends who come by...bring me tea and candy bars...I'll get back on a health track later...🤣).

I'm so excited to be a part of each of these events and am downright tickled to play a small role in you finding meaningful gifts for your family and friends. I'm furiously making as much inventory as I can manage. I should put a Santa hat on 🧑‍🎄 to keep me motivated and on task.

I hope to see you at one, or more!, of these events. It's the most magical time of the year, why not make it the mappiest too!!

Mappy Holidays to all!

I love a good blue. Often you associate older maps with faded or muted colors whether due to age or printing options of the time...but that's definitely not always the case. Like this pure electric blue from a 1965 Gulf Oil Map. I mean, I don't have a personal connection to Boston or Cape Cod, but I'm having a hard time wanting to let this blue go. It's just a kapow of bright and beautiful. Who's gonna take these sets home?
