When was the last time you used your formal dining room? For many of us, it's the most underused space in the house. If you don't have a dedicated home office, the dining room could be the perfect place to work. Here are five tips to get you started.
1. Pick a spot and stick with it - Consider your needs for the type of work you do. Need natural light? Pick the seat closest to the window. Need privacy? Select the area that's the furthest away from the room's openings. Need a nice background for video calls? Select the spot with the best background (preferably without the wine and bar accoutrements).
2. Add lighting - Most dining rooms don't have task lighting. Bring in a lamp if you need it.
3. Portable storage - Decorative boxes and baskets are great options for storing work supplies. This will allow you to put things away and end the work day.
4. Comfortable seating - A dining table is often slightly higher than a desk. Don't be afraid to add a pillow to the seat for additional comfort. Bonus tip: use boxes or books to raise your computer screen to eye level.
5. Inspiration - Add a little something to make your smile, encourage you or remind you what you're working for. This could be as simple as your favorite candle, inspirational quote or even a picture of your family.
