Oak trees provide one of the warmest, long-burning logs and traditionally the firewood wood of choice for the Christmas Yule log.
In Scotland, birch was often favoured and in France, a cherry log may be more available. A Yule log is a specially selected large log that will burn a long time to produce a generous amount of heat and light. It could even be partially burned on each of the 12 days of Christmas, and symbolises the desire for the summer sun to return bringing warmth and light.
The tradition of having a chocolate cake made in the shape of a log (Bûche De Noël), and decorated with candles, originated in the 1800s in France – but is equally enjoyable over the festive season.
