Palms are one of the most misunderstood trees on a Southwest Florida property — and one of the most important to get right, especially heading into storm season.

Dead fronds, overgrown boots, and neglected canopies aren’t just an eyesore — they’re a liability when winds pick up. Tree West provides ISA Certified Arborist palm care for all species across Lee and Collier counties.

Hurricane season isn’t just about your roof and shutters — look up.

Dead branches, split limbs, and overgrown canopy can turn into serious liability the moment a storm rolls through. A weak limb that’s been hanging on all year doesn’t need a hurricane to come down — just enough wind to find its breaking point. And when it lands on a car, a walkway, or a neighbor’s property, that’s no longer a tree problem. It’s a liability problem.

Tree West’s ISA Certified Arborists can walk your property before the season ramps up and flag what needs to come down now versus what can wait. Early removal of hazardous limbs is almost always cheaper and safer than emergency cleanup after a storm — and it protects you, your residents, and your association from the kind of claim nobody wants to deal with in August.

If it’s been a while since your trees were inspected, now’s the time.

That mulch "volcano" around your tree is killing it.

We see this on almost every property we assess in Southwest Florida - mulch piled high against tree trunks like a volcano. Looks neat and tidy. Kills the tree.

Here's what happens:

Mulch against the trunk traps moisture. In SWFL's humidity, that constant moisture causes the bark to rot. Rot invites insects and disease. Within 2-3 years, the tree starts declining. By the time you notice, the damage is often irreversible.

The tree you paid $500-2,000 to install? Dead because of $20 worth of mulch applied wrong.

How to fix it:

WRONG: Mulch piled against trunk (volcano shape)
RIGHT: Mulch pulled back 3-6 inches from trunk (donut shape)

Mulch should be 2-3 inches deep maximum - not 6-8 inches piled high. Keep it away from the trunk. The tree will thank you by actually surviving.

Walk your property today. If you see mulch touching tree trunks, pull it back. Takes 5 minutes and saves thousands in tree replacement costs.

If you know Estero, you probably recognize this one — Corkscrew Palms Commerce Center, right along Corkscrew Rd. We just wrapped a property-wide palm trimming job here ahead of hurricane season.

Pre-storm palm trimming isn’t just cosmetic. Removing loose fronds and old seed pods cuts down on flying debris during high winds, reduces strain on the canopy, and lowers the risk of a palm snapping or uprooting altogether. For commercial properties, that means less liability, less post-storm cleanup, and a property that’s ready before the season even starts.

Hurricane season is here — if your property hasn’t had its palms inspected yet, now’s the time. We have an ISA Certified Arborist on staff and work properties across Bonita Springs, Estero, Naples, and Fort Myers.

Hurricane season in Southwest Florida is not the time to guess about your trees. 🌀

Weak structure, dead wood, and improperly weighted canopies don’t show up as problems — until 80mph winds do. A pre-season assessment by an ISA Certified Arborist is one of the smartest things a homeowner or property manager can do before June 1st.

At Tree West, we assess risk, remove hazardous limbs, reduce canopy load, and document everything — so your property is prepared and your records are clean if you ever need them.

Sanibel and Captiva taught us what storms can do. We’ve been working these islands and this coastline since before Ian. We know what holds and what doesn’t.

Don’t wait for a watch to become a warning.

Hurricane season is here — and your palms are one of the first things we look at.

Dead fronds, seed pods, and overgrown canopies act like a sail in high winds. When a storm rolls through, that excess weight and wind resistance can mean the difference between a palm that flexes and rides it out — and one that fails entirely, taking out whatever’s underneath it.

Professional palm trimming before storm season isn’t just about curb appeal. It’s about reducing the load on the tree, improving wind resistance, and removing the debris that becomes a projectile at 80+ mph.

At Tree West, our ISA Certified Arborists don’t just cut — we evaluate. We’re looking at the canopy structure, the trunk condition, and the overall health of the tree before we ever make a cut. Over-trimming palms (a common mistake called “hurricane cutting”) actually weakens them — so proper technique matters as much as timing.

If your palms haven’t been trimmed this season, now is the time. We serve Sanibel, Captiva, and the broader SWFL area.

🌀 Hurricane Season Officially Starts Today.

The strongest storms don’t create tree defects — they expose the ones that were already there.

Every year, we see mature trees fail because of hidden decay, poor structure, overextended limbs, codominant stems, root issues, or years of deferred pruning. Many of these risks can be identified before a storm ever enters the Gulf.

Now is the time to assess your property’s canopy, not when a storm is three days away.

At Tree West, our ISA Certified Arborists help property owners, HOAs, and managers identify potential hazards before they become costly emergencies.

Hurricane season isn’t just about preparing for wind.

It’s about understanding which trees are prepared to withstand it.

When it comes to your trees and palms, there's a big difference between a crew that shows up with a pole saw and a certified arborist team that actually knows what they're looking at.

At Tree West, we climb. We assess. We make decisions based on the health and structure of each individual tree — not just what's quickest to cut.

What you're seeing here is one of our climbers up in a Queen Palm canopy, performing precise frond removal and boot cleaning to protect the tree's long-term health and appearance. That exposed boot damage in the first photo is exactly the kind of thing an untrained eye misses — and a certified arborist catches before it becomes a bigger problem.

Tree West is the tree care division of Island Home Service, and we serve as the go-to tree partner for residential estates, condo associations, HOAs, and commercial properties across Southwest Florida. Whether it's scheduled maintenance, storm prep, hazard removal, or full canopy management — we handle it all under ISA Certified Arborist oversight.

🌀 Hurricane Season Is Here — Is Your Property Ready?

One of the most overlooked ways to protect your property before a storm hits? Your trees.

Healthy, well-maintained trees are far more resilient in high winds. Neglected ones become the problem. Here's what every SWFL homeowner and property manager should be doing right now:

✅ Get an arborist inspection. Not all risk is visible. Dead wood, weak branch unions, and root issues can lead to failure even on trees that look fine from the outside.

✅ Remove dead wood and hazardous limbs. Dead branches don't need hurricane-force winds to come down — get them out before the season starts.

✅ Don't over-trim. Heavy cutting actually weakens a tree's structure. Storm prep pruning should be strategic, not severe.

✅ Clear vegetation from buildings. Trees in contact with rooflines and gutters can cause serious damage even without a direct failure.

✅ Know your high-risk species. Laurel Oaks, Australian Pines, and certain palms are known to perform poorly in high winds — especially near structures.

At Tree West, our ISA Certified Arborist team offers complimentary property walks to assess risk and help you prioritize before the season gets going.
