Michael Sorkin Studio Green Architecture with a special interest in NYC

The Michael Sorkin Studio has - for thirty years -undertaken projects around the world and engaged in important theoretical work. The Studio takes a special interest in the design of cities and in the question of sustainable architecture and infrastructure. The firm is also known for the singularity of its formal research which ranges from its current commission to design district housing in Tianj

in, China to the planning of a highly sustainable new town in Turkey. The studio has extensive experience of and fascination with waterfront designs, which include projects in Shanghai, Hamburg, New York, Cleveland, Chungcheong (Korea), Berlin, Almere (Netherlands), and it loves the challenge of
beautifully managing this most important urban gradient. The Studio operates in parallel with Terreform, a non-profit, that undertakes research and independent advocacy planning.

Introduction
Michael Sorkin and Sharon Zukin
THEIR ABSENCE IS INDELIBLE: the Twin 'Towers were landmarks, buildings you could not lose sight of no matter where you were. They told you which way to face when you wanted to walk downtown, were your first view of the city when driving in from New Jersey, and anchored the skyline when you were flying out of JFK. As you rode the D train over the East River into Manhattan after dark, they were fluorescent chessboards against the black night sky. Sometimes sinister, sometimes beautiful, sometimes just banal, they were icons of New York City -- the best-known buildings in the world, the Everest of our urban Himalayas.

BIG PLANS
Made for China

The design of cities in their all-at-once has become anathema, deplored as โ€œutopianโ€ (a concept itself, sadly, in bad odor), masculinist, authoritarian, etc., etc.

We disagree and think this discourse is vital, not only imaginatively but on the ground: every city has a point of departure, a set of governing ideas that limn the terms โ€” however constricting or loose โ€” for its development and maturation.

In light of explosive growth โ€” by mid-century 70% of the worldโ€™s population will be urban โ€” and of accelerating environmental disaster, it is only rational that new cities be a major part of the solution.

The attraction of China....

โ€œCommunities (have) to be created, fought for, tended like gardens.โ€
Barack Obama Dreams from My Father..
Although the presidential library is now as natural a part of our national trove of civic rituals and commemorations as the pledge of allegiance, it is, like the pledge, a fairly new one. The first presidential library was FDRโ€™s in Hyde Park, New York. Based on his own sketches, it opened in 1941, one year before the pledge was adopted by Congress and not long after the construction of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials in Washington, DC.....
