It's always fun to see the plants we put in as tiny fragile transplants, grow healthy and start to bloom. I also enjoy learning about the endless varieties of plants available ,and how each of them fills its own little niche in the ecosystem, and in human culture. This one is an aquatic plant called Broadleaf Arrowhead, or more specifically Sagittaria latifolia.

From Wikipedia:

Sagittaria latifolia is a plant found in shallow wetlands and is sometimes known as broadleaf arrowhead,[5] duck-potato,[6] Indian potato, or wapato. This plant produces edible tubers that have traditionally been extensively used by Native Americans.

Just finished a quick front entrance clean up and job for my friend . We removed the overgrown bushes and passionflower vine growing right against the house, just waiting for an ember to settle into them and catch the whole house on fire.

Adding some microbial magic to my potting mix with compost from . I use an extract of this stuff on every plant I install in my designs. I've had an almost 100 percent survival rate for transplants treated with extract, and that's a pretty big deal for a landscape installer, especially with the quality of plants you sometimes get from commercial nurseries. It means I don't need to revisit the site to replace dead plants, and my customers stay happy. It also means I get to inoculate one more yard with a healthy soil ecosystem, which makes me happy.

I'm starting a small propagation nursery so I can provide the species and varieties I've found work best directly to my clients. Adding this compost to the potting mix means the plants will begin their life with the abundant diversity of soil life they need to thrive. When they are finally transplanted into the ground, they will already have a relationship with the biology around their roots, and will experience less shock because of it.

Bike rides are an excellent way to explore your local environment and observe nature. On my ride yesterday I observed that this road cut provided a striking example of how a healthy root/soil system will soak up water like a sponge, and hold on to it while less healthy soils are drying out. This road cut is south facing, so all day long the sun is heating it up and pulling moisture from the soil. The soil within the root zone of the plants is holding on to more of that moisture. Even though the soil is losing water though the heated surface of the road cut, the roots and fungal network of the topsoil are moving water from cooler areas to replenish the root zone of the roadside plants. This root zone is even defying gravity by holding water up above the subsoil, this is a visual representation of a soil water "lense.". Notice that this lense is deeper under the oak trees, where deeper roots are extending that water lense downward. When we combine water harvesting features like swales with a deep and healthy root/soil system, we can extend this water lense deep underground and store an incredible amount of water through the dry months, making for a more resilient garden or food forest.

It's been years since I peeled a log, so peeling these blue gum eucalyptus poles today brought back some memories of my time in Montana. They are a lot easier to peel than the doug firs and tamaracks I was peeling up there. After a bit of reading I found out that eucalyptus are a hardwood that make good rot resistant fence posts, so I'm trying

That's a wrap on the basalt sound barrier wall, time for some plants and time to create the patina and blend it into the landscape. The clients are already feeling a sense of calm and peace without that constant noise.

The wall is shaping up, tons of basalt and metal are making quite an impressive structure, a lot nicer looking than your 'typical' sound barrier wall of boring blocks.

While picking navel oranges in one of our client's food forests, we came across this little Western Red Bat having a snooze, nicely camouflaged as just another orange. This is a perfect example of how a well designed food forest ecosystem can invite and attract a diversity of wildlife from the surrounding area. Every creature has an important role to play in the ecosystem, so the more diversity of life in your garden, the more resilient it becomes. Western Red Bats prefer riparian habitats, so I'd like to believe that the pond we just installed played a big role in inviting this new species into the mix. .
