It’s that time of year again! When an Oregon-based marketing company called Nerus Strategies reaches out on behalf of our private-equity-owned hometown newspaper to ask all the small businesses in our community to use their marketing lists to promote an ad campaign that benefits a media company owned by a hedge fund!

They call it . I call it garbage!

This year, rather than vote for your favorite small businesses and encouraging us to participate in a popularity contest that only serves to enrich the private equity firms that have decimated journalism in a country that so viciously depends on it, especially in times like these, I would encourage you to spend a few dollars at your favorite shops, restaurants, gyms, and hair salons this summer. Or: support independent journalism! Tip someone on Patreon, donate to public television or radio, or buy a subscription to a locally owned magazine or newspaper like or .

Businesses: please boycott this effort and advertise locally instead. Shoppers: keep shopping locally. Need advice on what’s actually the best in Tacoma? There’s a subreddit for that. /AskTacoma

A lot of people have been reaching out about floral positions as we get closer to opening our new location in Centralia this fall.

Some things to know about how we work:
✸ We don't use floral foam—we design using chicken wire
✸ We steer clear of custom wedding work, focusing on our à la carte menu: standard SKUs & 4 color palettes
✸ We design using seasonal, local flowers—we aim to source 60-90% of our stems locally
✸ Our commitment to sourcing locally isn't a mandate, nor does it have any legal binding—we have to sub sometimes, and that's okay! Transparency is the goal.
✸ We do not hire based on previous floral experience (seriously)
✸ What we ARE looking for: flexibility, adaptability, availability on Valentine's Day and Mother's Day, design skills from other mediums (cake decorating, for example)
✸ Our floral shifts start early in the morning, and leave in the early afternoon
✸ Floral shifts are hands-on and long hours standing
✸ Other work experience that's helpful: working in kitchens, catering, managing restaurants or food businesses, building anything with perishable product where "first in, first out" means something
✸ You have to be 18 to work at Fernseed—our shifts don't currently align with minor work hours restrictions

We don't have any active job postings at either location at the moment, but we're hearing your interest! The best thing you can do if you want to work here is fill out the short form on our website JOBS section. We read every submission personally—but we can't respond to everyone individually. We review those website submissions when a job does get posted, to check if anyone who applied previously might be a match. If yes, we'll reach out! We also email everyone who has previously applied for a job with us when we post any new job listings.

What questions do you have about working here?

A little sneak peek at what we’re building in the studio this week. 👀

Saturday morning we’re hosting mini portrait sessions with photographer — ten minutes, 2-3 edited shots, and a backdrop made entirely of our dried floral inventory. Bundles, stems, and textures in every direction! It’s a setting that’s genuinely one-of-a-kind.

Sessions are 10 minutes, every 15 minutes, from 10am–12pm. Slots are limited and filling up fast — link in bio to book.

And if you want to stick around after, we’ve got a wreath-making workshop Saturday afternoon and a mini arrangements workshop Sunday. Full lineup at the link.

We took a risk on these lion paw pot feet by Bergs Potter, but the response has been overwhelmingly goth and whimsical. If you bought these and have them hanging out at home we want to see them in their new environment. Can you DM us a photo?
