Behind the Build — Episode 6

Most people don’t realize this…

You can’t install a finished soffit under a deck unless the deck is fully waterproofed.

Otherwise, water drains straight through the boards and sits on top of the soffit — which means staining, swelling, mold, and failure.

On this build we installed Trex RainEscape, a hidden trough system that captures and diverts all water away from the structure.

That allowed us to finish the underside with tongue-and-groove Hemlock for a warm, architectural look.

We also offer:
• Composite soffit
• Cedar, Pine, or Hemlock T&G
• Vented aluminum soffit

But the order matters.

Water management first.
Finish details second.

That’s the difference between a deck that looks good…
And one that performs for decades.

Behind the Build – Episode 4: Deck Lighting

Great decks don’t disappear when the sun goes down.

On this build, we installed a fully integrated lighting system by in-lite, designed to elevate both safety and atmosphere.

Riser lights guide every step with a clean architectural glow, improving visibility while keeping the look modern and refined. Surface lights frame the deck perimeter, adding depth and subtle definition across the entire space.

No harsh brightness.
No visual clutter.
Just intentional lighting that complements the build.

Because the best outdoor spaces aren’t only built for the day — they’re meant to be experienced after dark.

Behind the Build – Episode 3: Deck Board Patterns

This episode is all about how layout transforms a deck from standard to standout.

On this build, the main CompDeck surface runs linear with the house—clean lines, modern flow, and a seamless visual connection. Every perimeter board is mitred, so there are no exposed cut ends anywhere on the deck.

Then we move to the grand staircase. The landing becomes a feature of its own with a herringbone pattern and diamond inlay—bold, custom, and completely unique. The stair set follows our proven composite finishing method, built for durability and long-term performance.

This is intentional design.
Every board matters.
Every detail shows.

Post Series: Behind the Build – Episode 2

Details make the difference.

In this episode, I’m breaking down how we took a standard 6x6 pressure-treated post and transformed it into a bold architectural feature. We wrapped it in SmartTrim, added custom trim at the base, and painted it to perfectly match the home.

The result?
A clean, polished post with more bulk, more presence, and a far more grand, finished look.

This is the kind of upgrade that quietly elevates an entire deck.

Follow along as we continue this series, showcasing the products and design details that set a custom build apart.

The Heritage Point Project is a true showcase of collaboration, craftsmanship, and creative vision. This build was completed in partnership with our trusted landscape collaborator, Luke’s Design & Build Landscaping. Luke brought this expansive landscaping project to us, and together we brought the entire outdoor environment to life—blending structure, design, and landscape into one cohesive, high-end result.
The grand centerpiece of this project is the back deck and pergola. The deck itself is a large, elegant structure finished with TimberTech composite in Sea Salt Grey. It features a breathtaking 16-foot-wide grand staircase with illuminated risers, creating a dramatic and inviting focal point. Surrounding the deck is frameless 12mm glass railing supplied and installed by Innovative Railing, offering uninterrupted views and a sleek, modern finish.
Above the deck stands a one-of-a-kind pergola—an absolute masterpiece. Built with a pressure-treated frame and fully wrapped in SmartTrim, the structure was transformed into something bold and substantial, giving it a robust, architectural presence. The entire pergola was painted in a rich black, and topped with a polycarbonate roof to keep the deck surface dry and usable in all conditions. The detailing throughout this pergola is truly magnificent, making it a defining feature of the home and a standout example of custom craftsmanship.
Next is the towering 10-foot cedar privacy wall—both functional and artistic. This feature provides excellent privacy while serving as a true work of craftsmanship. Every detail was meticulously built, from the pergola-style topper to the individually installed 2x2 spindles separating the framed lattice sections. This wall was a highly time-intensive build, demanding precision at every stage, and was ultimately stained to enhance the natural beauty of the cedar. It stands as a striking architectural element within the yard.
At the front of the home, we completed a full tear-down and rebuild of the existing pressure-treated deck, replacing it with composite in Trex Island Mist. The result is a clean, refined, and welcoming entrance that dramatically enhances the home’s curb appeal. This front deck was finished with aluminum picket railing, creating a polished and timeless look.
Woven through the backyard landscape is a custom boardwalk designed as both a functional and decorative feature. Built with Fiberon composite in Bungalow, it serves as a graceful transition between areas of the expansive yard, guiding movement through the terrain while tying together the surrounding landscaping. It’s a subtle but powerful design element that elevates the entire outdoor experience.
This project took over a month to complete, with a budget range of $70,000–$90,000. The result is a magnificent outdoor environment for a beautiful, high-value home—one that reflects the very best of what can be achieved when inspired design meets exceptional craftsmanship.

Some views are too good to put bars in front of.

This lake deserves to be seen, not framed by posts and pickets. That’s why we chose a frameless 12mm glass railing from Innovative Railing — full safety with zero visual clutter.

These panels are crystal clear, incredibly solid, and built to handle real Canadian conditions. The result is a railing that feels just as premium as it looks: sleek, modern, and rock-solid under hand.

Nothing between you and the water. Just pure, uninterrupted views.
