Before you open a tin this spring, one question matters more than the colour. Is the wall actually dry?

Not dry to the touch. Dry as in under 15 percent moisture content, which is the maximum a wall should carry before top coats go on. Paint over a wall that is still holding winter water and it will blister, usually about three months later.

Our new guide from Herman Rabe, our Technical Training Manager, walks through the inspection properly.

✔ What to look for - chalkiness, friable plaster, loose and flaky paint, fungus
✔ The crack repair sequence - open cracks to at least 5mm, wash with Fungal Wash, prime with Damp Cure, wait the full 24 hours, fill, then prime and wait again
✔ Where Damp Cure helps and where it does not - it handles up to 40 percent while new plaster dries, but it will not stop constant damp from a retaining wall. That needs waterproofing, not primer.
✔ Choosing by exposure rather than by colour

Sound, clean and dry. Everything else follows from that.

Winter leaves a mark on exterior walls, and most of it stays invisible until you go looking.

Before you open a tin this spring, walk the outside of the house and check for these:

✔ Chalky residue on your hand when you rub the wall
✔ Hairline cracks in the plaster, especially under windowsills
✔ Dark patches near the base of walls that have not dried out
✔ Flaking or lifting around gutter lines and downpipes
✔ Moss or algae on the shaded elevations

If the wall is still holding moisture from rainy season, painting over it traps it in. That is where the bubbling and peeling come from three months later.

Prominent Paints Damp Cure is formulated for raw or damp cement plaster and stays breathable, so moisture can move out rather than sitting behind the coating. It is not a waterproofing system though, and it will not fix a leaking gutter. Sort the source first, then coat.

Spring is the best window you will get. Warm enough to cure properly, dry enough to prep properly, and well ahead of the summer sun.

In case you missed it, here is what we shared this month.

August was about colour, and about the fact that colour is never only about colour.

The first guide answers the question we get asked in-store more than any other: why does the paint look different at home than it did in the shop? Light, undertones, UV exposure, salt air and what is already in your room are all doing more work than the tin is. It also covers the test pot method properly, which will save you a repaint.

The second guide is about sheen — the decision almost nobody makes on purpose. Matt, satin or enamel is not a taste question. It decides whether you can wipe a mark off the wall, how visible your plaster is, and how soon you are painting again.

Different readers. Same underlying point. Colour is the last decision, not the first.

And the sheen is the part that decides whether you can wipe a mark off the wall or whether the mark takes the colour with it.

Same colour. Three walls. Three completely different rooms.

Nothing here changed except the sheen level, and most people never think about it until the wall is already up.

A matt finish absorbs light from every direction. It reads deeper and softer, it evens out an imperfect plaster run, and it forgives the wall for being a wall.

Add sheen and the light comes back at you in an organised way. The same colour reads lighter, cleaner and slightly more saturated. It also shows every ridge, patch and roller stop you left behind.

And sheen decides how the surface lives. The wall in a passage gets shoulders and school bags against it. That wall has to be washable, which is a job for a satin finish like Satin Silk. The wall behind your headboard does not, and a matt will look better there.

So settle the finish before you argue about the colour. The finish is half the colour.

The colour on your wall is not the colour in the tin. It is the colour in the tin, plus whatever is underneath it.

This is the part everyone skips, and it is the part that decides whether the job holds.

New cement plaster is strongly alkaline. Paint it directly and the alkalinity will work against the coating over time, and you will see it long before you expected to. Prominent Paints Damp Cure and Neuklad Alkali Resistant Primer is formulated for cement plaster and masonry, and it is the sensible first coat on new interior plaster work.

An old painted wall is a different problem. If the existing coating is chalking, or has lost its grip on the plaster beneath it, your beautiful new colour is only ever as attached as the layer under it. Rub a dry hand across the wall. If it comes away powdery, you have work to do first.

And patches. A patched wall is two surfaces pretending to be one. They absorb differently, so they will finish differently, and you will see the difference in raking light for the rest of the wall's life.

Prep is not the boring part before the painting. Prep is the painting.

There is one wall in your house that takes more punishment than any other, and nobody ever thinks about it until it is too late.

The passage.

School bags. Shoulders. A bicycle being wheeled through. Furniture on moving day. The dog. Every one of those is a small negotiation between your wall and the rest of your life, and the wall usually loses.

Most people paint a passage in the same matt they used in the bedroom, because it is the same tin and it is already open. Then they discover that a matt wall cannot be cleaned without the mark taking colour with it.

A passage is a cleaning surface. It needs a finish built to be washed, not one built to look soft. Prominent Paints Satin Silk is formulated for exactly this — walls that get touched, marked and wiped down for years.

A 1Lt sample for a tester costs a bit, but it’s worth it. Repainting a lounge costs a weekend and most of a Saturday's temper.

Here is how to use one properly.

Two coats. Not one. The first coat is still fighting whatever is underneath it, and the second coat is where the real colour finally arrives.

Onto a loose board, not the wall. Roughly A2. Now you can carry the colour to the window, prop it against the skirting, hold it beside the curtain, and walk it down the passage.

Leave a bare border. If your test patch is surrounded by the old wall colour, you are judging it against a neighbour it will never actually have.

Then look at it three times. Morning. Midday. Under the lamps at night. If you still like it at seven in the evening, buy the tin.

Give it a full day to dry first. Wet paint is not the colour yet.
