Always disconnect a plug from the socket by holding the plug not the cord. Any plug that feels hot should be examined immediately. A periodical check should be done on the cords of washing machines and dish washers to ensure that the earth (green/yellow) wire is connected. These machines are operated in situations where water and moisture are likely to cause a fault which can have deadly consequences.

Check all the appliance cords in you home and workshop frequently. If frayed cords is noticed it should be replaced immediately. Never use PVC cord on appliances that get hot near the terminals, e.g. Irons, toasters, waffle-irons etc. A heat resistant cotton braided cord should be used for these appliances.
