Meet Derek, a Professional Architect with decades of experience across residential, commercial and mixed-use projects. Since joining Peerutin Karol Architects, he’s brought not only deep technical knowledge and design insight, but also a generosity of spirit that continues to shape the studio around him.

For Derek, architecture is as much about people as it is about buildings. Passionate about mentoring and collaboration, he finds real fulfilment in helping younger architects and technologists grow into confident professionals, while continuing to learn and evolve through every project and experience.

In the office, Derek is known for his calm presence, thoughtful guidance and ability to bring clarity to even the most complex challenges. His steady leadership and willingness to share knowledge make him an invaluable part of the team.

He’s also renowned for taking any opportunity to put pen to paper and sketch drawings and designs before moving to digital. His advice? “Keep them simple enough to express the basic ideas of form, orientation and use of space.”

Outside of work, Derek enjoys travelling, discovering new places, and spending time with family and friends. And as for retirement? In his words: why retire from what you love to do?

Context Over Convention: Practising Architecture Without a Fixed Language

In an era where architectural discourse is increasingly shaped by global visibility, rapid image circulation and the pressure to define a recognisable “language”, the question arises: what remains when these layers are stripped away?

At Peerutin Karol, the answer lies not in formal consistency, but in interpretation. Architecture is not an act of imposition, but of response – to client, context, constraint and opportunity. As founding partner and design principal David Peerutin notes, “a building should always address the fundamentals correctly. It should answer the brief… our role is to interpret rather than impose.”

Architecture on the Atlantic Seaboard demands a careful negotiation between landscape, light and exposure. Here's a look at the design thinking behind Bantry Bay House, recently complete in Cape Town's prestigious coastal suburb.

Designed by Peerutin Karol Architects, this luxury residence explores this relationship through a six-level residential refurbishment shaped around openness, spatial clarity and uninterrupted views of the coastline.

Working from an existing structure, the house was fundamentally reconfigured through the addition of two new levels, a repositioned lift core and a complete reconsideration of the internal planning. The architecture unfolds vertically, moving through a sequence of living, entertainment and wellness spaces that respond directly to the site and its changing coastal light.

The design language is intentionally restrained. Expansive glazing, soft natural textures and a tonal material palette create interiors that feel calm and resolved, allowing proportion, light and outlook to define the experience of the space.

At its centre, the social living level extends towards a pool terrace and curated wine room, while the upper floors become progressively more private and introspective. The top level is conceived as a dedicated wellness retreat, incorporating a gym, sauna, steam room, ice bath and terrace overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Through a careful balance of intervention and refinement, the project reimagines the contemporary coastal home as both an architectural response to place and a highly tailored living environment.

At the scale of masterplanning – a framework for site development, balancing building footprints with infrastructure, public spaces and the environment – context becomes the starting point.

Set on a purpose-designed peninsula extending into the Lagos Lagoon, adjacent to Eko Atlantic, Nautica Rise in Sea Lagos is conceived as a connected waterfront development where architecture, landscape and urban structure come together.

A network of boulevards, boardwalks and open spaces links residential, retail and hospitality elements to the water’s edge. As Nautica Rise moves into construction, the vision begins to take form – from masterplan and design, by Peerutin Karol Architects, to built reality.

A design exploration for a potential client to enhance and densify an existing office park in Johannesburg.

The proposal developed through a series of iterations, ultimately resolving as a single tower positioned toward the rear of the site – offices anchoring the lower levels, with residential units above.

At the centre of the existing piazza, a lightweight glass pavilion is introduced as a flexible public element, designed to accommodate exhibitions, small performances and community gatherings.

Happy Workers' Day from our team at Peerutin Karol Architects.

On site, we’re reminded that every project is the result of many hands working together – from design through to construction – shaping ideas into built form, for people and communities to enjoy long into the future.

We're taking a moment this long weekend to acknowledge and thank all those whose work, seen and unseen, brings architecture to life, and helps shape futures with ours.

When we approach a design brief, such as this penthouse interior at the V&A Waterfront Marina, the starting point is always context. Here, the apartment is positioned within one of Cape Town’s most recognisable urban landscapes, overlooking the working harbour, the Zeitz MOCAA and Cape Town Stadium. The interior responds directly to this setting, framing these views while creating a calm, resolved environment that sits in quiet dialogue with its surroundings.

A restrained palette of natural finishes establishes a sense of continuity throughout, allowing light and outlook to take precedence. Generous glazing draws the exterior in, while the spatial planning supports both everyday living and more considered moments of gathering and entertaining.

Central to the design is the client’s curated collection of African art, which informs the atmosphere of the space. The interiors are intentionally composed to support these works – providing a refined, understated backdrop that allows each piece to be experienced within a cohesive whole.

This approach extends to the selection of furniture and fittings. Locally made pieces by Andrew Dominic and Meyer von Wielligh introduce material richness and craftsmanship, complemented by bespoke joinery by Spotlight Joinery. These elements are balanced with carefully selected designer fittings, creating an interior that feels both grounded in its context and elevated in its expression.

The result is a home that reflects its location not only through its views, but through a considered integration of architecture, art and craft – a contemporary interior shaped by place, and by the client’s way of living.

An exploration of organic geometry, material contrast and the interplay of light and water, Erbil House redefines the idea of home as a fluid, living landscape.

Our design of this home in the Kurdistan region of Iraq evolved from a series of concentric rings, each devoted to a specific function – from arrival and social spaces at the centre to more private zones for family, guests and staff at the periphery.

This spatial logic creates an organic plan of curving walls, courtyards and terraces that flow seamlessly between inside and out. The resulting architecture feels both grounded and dynamic, with spaces alternating between inward-looking courtyards and outward-looking terraces that embrace the surrounding hills – and effectively provide cooling, shaded refuge in the heat of summer and warmth around central fires in the cooler months.

At its edges, the house dissolves into landscape, blurring the line between shelter and site. A home shaped as much by movement and atmosphere as by structure.

Founding Partner and Design Principal at Peerutin Karol, cites designing the Iron Man House () as one of his most memorable career moments with the architecture studio.

"All projects have their ‘memorable moments’ for sure," says David, "some good and sometimes not so good."

"But I would say that the process of designing the so-called Iron-man House in Clifton, Cape Town, stands out as a unique opportunity to work in the most spectacular environment, with a forward-thinking client who enabled us to dream a bit with him."
