NAGARE — A COLLABORATION IN FLOW

Nagare - meaning flow or current — is a sculptural collaboration between siblings Beverley Burne of Fat Flower and her younger brother, Greg Burne of Gregory Burne Craftsman.

Currently taking shape for a restaurant on the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, Nagare is a large illuminated sculpture composed of two interlocking, ribbon-like forms. The shape was conceived by the project’s architects, while its physical creation brings together two distinct but deeply connected crafts.

Greg has meticulously formed the metal framework, while Beverley is transforming the structure by hand-weaving thousands of metres of cotton drawstring across its flowing contours. Sophisticated LED lighting will be integrated into the sculpture, illuminating it from within and giving the finished work an ever-changing sense of movement.

Although Beverley and Greg have collaborated before through lighting, lampshades and chandeliers, Nagare marks their first move into large-scale sculptural work.

Both are instinctively drawn to detail — perhaps something that runs in the family. The result is a one-off, locally manufactured piece where engineering and artistry meet: strong yet delicate, structured yet fluid, and shaped by the natural rhythm of the Indian Ocean.

These images of the artists and the work in progress, offer a glimpse into Nagare’s making. The sculpture is still unfolding, and we look forward to revealing it in its completed coastal home.
