I USED MY STEPSISTER'S PHONE TO TEXT MY BOYFRIEND
EPISODE 18

Everything in my room was upside down. My dresses were scattered all over the floor, my books were thrown around carelessly, and the bed looked like someone had fought on it. My heart skipped when I noticed the place where I hid the phone was empty. I searched again and again, even checking under the mattress, but the phone was gone. That was when it dawned on me that my stepmom and her wicked daughter had taken it.
I rushed downstairs immediately and confronted them.
“Mom, who scattered my room like this?”
She didn’t even blink before replying, “My money went missing, and when I searched your room, I discovered you are the thief in this house. You stole my money and bought a handset, abai?”
“I didn’t steal any money,” I said, my voice shaking.
She ignored me completely, and her daughter just stood there smiling like she had finally won. Before I could even defend myself properly, my father returned from his long trip. As soon as he entered the house, my stepmom narrated her cooked-up story and brought out the phone Dzekem had given me as evidence. She boldly claimed I had been stealing money from her for a long time.
My father turned to me and asked, “Was this phone found in your room?”
“Yes, Dad,” I answered honestly.
He became furious. “Who owns this phone?”
“It was a gift, Dad, it—”
He cut me short and barked, “Answer me clearly. Who owns the phone?”
“I do, Dad.”
“Then stop calling my wife a liar,” he said angrily.
I told him again that I never stole her money, but he wasn’t ready to listen. He threatened me, saying, “I think my wife is right. I should give you out to marry Akeri so you will stop causing trouble in this house.”
He later calmed down, but the next day, another issue came up. The money he left in his drawer was missing, a huge amount. Without thinking twice, he accused me again and promised to send me off to marry Akeri immediately. Because I was using an iPhone, he concluded that I must be the thief.
I didn’t even understand how everything turned against me so fast. My boyfriend loved me so much, and the moment my phone disappeared, I became restless. I was accused of theft and called all sorts of names. Nobody believed me, and I felt completely alone.
That was when I decided to do my worst, not in a bad way, but to fight for myself. I tried everything possible to find out where the phone was hidden. Meanwhile, they kept forcing the idea of marrying Akeri on me. Since that day, I hadn’t heard from Dzekem, and it broke my heart.
I was warned that if the man I claimed to be in love with didn’t show up soon to ask for my hand, I would be married off to Akeri whether I liked it or not. My father kept reminding me that I said I had a more responsible man, yet he had never shown up.
“My daughter,” he said one evening, “I told my wife that if there is someone who truly cares about you and wants to marry you, we should allow you to choose. But she said he is a wayo boy.”
“He is not a wayo boy,” I replied quickly.
“Then let him prove me wrong,” my father said. “If he comes here to present himself, I will investigate him properly. Whether he is richer than Akeri or not doesn’t matter to me. All I want is to be sure he can take good care of you. If he is responsible, I will accept him as your husband.”
“Okay, Dad. Thank you very much,” I said with relief.
I was so happy that my father had finally behaved like a reasonable man. It was now up to me to inform Dzekem to be fast and come forward. As I lay on my bed that night thinking about him and how to reach him, a very brilliant idea crossed my mind. I knew it was risky, and I might lose him if it failed, but I had no other choice.
Who wants more???
