In Haiti, extreme poverty and hunger have driven some communities to eat sun-dried mud cookies just to survive. Known locally as bonbon tè, these cookies are made from clay mixed with salt and vegetable shortening, then flattened and dried under the sun. According to the BBC, they are sold in markets and consumed in areas where food is scarce and prices are too high for many families to afford basic meals.

The practice is not cultural but a desperate response to chronic food insecurity. According to Human Rights Watch, these mud cookies offer little to no nutritional value and can cause long-term health issues, especially for children and pregnant women. Yet for many, they provide a temporary sense of fullness when no other food is available.

This heartbreaking reality highlights the severity of Haiti’s hunger crisis. According to the World Food Programme, nearly half the population faces acute food insecurity, making Haiti one of the most food-insecure countries in the Western Hemisphere.
