The Cape Gannet (Morus capensis) is a remarkable seabird endemic to southern Africa, renowned for its striking appearance and impressive diving abilities. With a wingspan of up to 2 meters, these birds are adept at plunge-diving from heights of up to 30 meters to capture fish, showcasing one of the most spectacular prey-capture behaviors among marine predators .
Breeding exclusively on six islands, three off South Africa and three off Namibia, the Cape Gannet's global population is estimated to be around 246,000 individuals . Notably, Bird Island in Lambert's Bay, South Africa, has experienced a significant recovery, with its population reaching 45,000 individuals in January 2025, the highest in 19 years .
Despite this positive trend, the species is classified as Endangered due to threats such as overfishing, habitat disturbance, and predation by Cape Fur Seals . Conservation efforts, including predator management and habitat protection, are crucial to ensuring the survival of this iconic seabird.
